Video: Incredible Inuit hunt mussels under sea ice
Posted by Graham_Land in Nature, Videos & Documentaries, Weird & Wonderful, 28 Nov 2011
Check out this amazing video from BBC’s Human Planet series.
I just had to post this BBC video I came across a few months ago while researching the Inuit settlements of northern Quebec.
This dangerous type of under ice mussel harvesting takes place in only two known communities in Arctic Canada, near the Hudson Strait.
Since agriculture is nonexistent there, Inuit of communities such as Kangiqsujuaq survive on diets of mostly seal meat. So mussels are a welcome and valued dietary supplement.
But the work of gathering mussels is dangerous stuff. Entering these otherworldly caves of sea ice during low tide means working by moonlight and risking being trapped under ice in a cold, watery grave.
The locals can only do this during extreme low tides, when sea ice drops by up to 12m (about 40 feet), opening fissures through which the exposed seabed – and its edible riches – can be glimpsed. The best time to go is when the moon is either full or brand new, as this is when the tide stays out the longest.

Clean burning stoves in poor nations should save lives
Indoor air pollution from cooking stoves is the a serious health risk in developing countries. According to UN figures, it causes cardio-pulmonary diseases and low birth weight, killing some 1,9 million people every year – mostly women and children. Rudimentary cooking stoves in poor nations are usually fueled by foraged wood, crop waste, coal and dung. Besides being a major health hazard, the use of such stoves has substantial and manifold effects on the environment. The soot, or black carbon, produced...
Make your blog fight climate change with the 350 Challenge from Brighter Planet
Your Planet, Brighter from Brighter Planet on Vimeo. In an effort to spread environmental awareness, Brighter Planet has a project called the 350 Challenge with the aim of encouraging bloggers and web users to be more carbon conscious. The number 350 is in reference to a related awareness campaign about the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere considered safe by many scientists – 350 parts per million. To make your blog fight climate change, simply go to...
Kids Can Help the Environment, Too
So many people place the emphasis of helping the environment or finding a “cure” for the Global Warming crisis on adults. World leaders, scientists, business CEO’s and even parents are constantly pressured to find solutions or “set a good example” for future generations to live by. What they apparently do not understand is with all the environmental problems we face today, age does not matter; everyone must do their part to help. While not everyone is as lucky as Bindi Irwin...
Breaking News: Oil Spill in San Francisco Bay
Not 30 minutes ago, the US Coast Guard reported an oil tanker leaking fuel into the San Francisco Bay. The slick that was caused is at least a mile long so far, and still expanding. Oil was leaked from the Panama-flagged Dubai Star during a fuel transfer this morning, and they are unsure how much exactly was spilled. Coast Guard water and aircraft are currently on the scene, about 2 ½ miles southeast of the Bay Bridge. Updates will be...
Stopping deforestation – Something we actually CAN do?
The international effort to halt the destruction of rainforests and biodiversity loss is considered to be far behind the fight to stop or mitigate man-made climate change. Since the later has been more or less a total failure so far, how can we hope for the former? Representatives at the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan will attempt to put a price tag on the preservation of natural resources such as forests, coral reefs and wetlands. What is hoped for...
An Interesting Solution to the Problem of Littered Cigarette Butts
Everywhere you go, you can find cigarette butts lying around somewhere. They’re on the sidewalk, on the streets, strewn across parking lots and even throughout parks, beaches, and our own backyards. It doesn’t matter if there’s a trash can or other cigarette disposal bin nearby, people flick them wherever they feel like it and it doesn’t do anyone any bit of good. Fortunately, one company has come up with an interesting solution for this problem. Since it’s highly unlikely that...
Sea Shepherd’s Operation: Waltzing Matilda Campaign Comes to an End
Yesterday, it was announced on the official Sea Shepherd blog that they are bringing this year’s whaling campaign to an end. With one ship sunk and the Steve Irwin heading back to port, that only left the Bob Barker left to contend with the whalers. Fortunately, there were hardly any of the Japanese ships left to contend with. The Shonan Maru #2 is currently making its way to Japan, with Ady Gil Captain Pete Bethune held prisoner aboard the ship. The...
Monetizing ecology: UK govt agency puts price tag on nature
The second installment of Adam Curtis’ new documentary series “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” (recently on the BBC) focuses on how ecologists once reasoned that nature was made up of mechanistic, computer-like systems, consisting of many factors working in harmony in order to maintain balance. This view of ecosystems, which does not fully account for the chaos caused by the inherent flux of nature, has fallen out of fashion among many contemporary ecologists. They claim previous ecological theories...
New London tower topped with turbines
The buzz around London's new Strata SE1 skyscraper isn't coming from the 3 wind turbines that crown its razor-like pinnacle, but from the attention this futuristic piece of architecture is garnering. The tower is part of a project to regenerate the central London neighborhood of Elephant and Castle. The rejuvenation project has been praised by a former U.S. president as an example of 'sustainable growth'. No need for any obvious Clinton jokes there, I think. From an article in the Guardian: While wind...
Green investment banks – The free market to the rescue?
An independent report commissioned by the UK’s Conservative Party – when they were in opposition – has found that Britain needs a green investment bank in order to meet its emissions goals for 2020. The report, entitled ‘Unlocking investment to deliver Britain's low carbon future’ discusses low carbon investment, issuing ‘green bonds’, tax incentives to help clean energy industries and levies on consumer fuel bills. From a Reuters Africa report: The scale of the investment required to meet UK climate change and renewable...

Thank you, Rachel. It is indeed amazing what people will do for a bit of the old mussels.
wow…I was totally blown away by that video. Among all seashells, mussels is my favorite. with its succulent flavor you can never go wrong , may it be baked, charbroiled, steamed or simple as clear soup. yum! so versatile.
Here you can purchase an equivalent of 2 dollars a kilo of mussels. I never imagine that somewhere across the globe , there are people who managed to risk their lives just for a bucket of my favorite seafood.
Article and videos like this humbles us to appreciate the convenience of life that were usually taken for granted…. I love the article.
Life has a delicate balance in these extreme places and climate change may be causing the ice to melt earlier, making this mussel hunt even more dangerous for the Inuit. Still, these people know how to survive and would probably fare better than us city folk should a disaster strike.
