Should whales and dolphins be given ‘human’ rights?

should-whales-and-dolphins-be-given-human-rights

At a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Vancouver, Canada, scientists and philosophers have argued for affording whales and dolphins the same ethical considerations as humans. Now, you may ask, how good are human rights anyway? Not that great in many places of the world. But, never mind that right now, this is a question of ideology, to be enshrined in law. We’ll worry about who actually follows that law later.   The idea is that, under domestic and international law, the Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans would guarantee rights for dolphins and whales…

Japan: Tsunami aid used to fuel whale hunt

japan-tsunami-aid-used-to-fuel-whale-hunt

2.3bn yen ($29 million/ €22 million) in victims’ aid for the March 11 tsunami, which devastated communities on the northeastern coast of Japan, has been diverted to the country’s whaling industry. This discovery has sparked outrage from environmentalist groups like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd and could further damage Japan’s international reputation. Junichi Sato, executive director for Greenpeace Japan, is quoted in the Independent: Not only is the whaling industry unable to survive without large increases in government handouts, now it’s siphoning money away from the victims of the 11 March triple disaster, at a time when they need it most….

Last summer, a fin whale got lost in the shallow waters of the Vejle Fjord between Sweden and Denmark. The animal, worn out by a long journey, was unable to reach the sea on it’s own again. video-southern-right-whale-breaches-onto-sailboat-in-south-africa

A photo showing a southern right whale breaching on top of a sailboat in South Africa was met with skepticism when it appeared in the media last week. Claims that the picture was ‘Photoshopped’ seem to have now been repudiated with the surfacing of a video of the breach. The video, shown on CBS News in the United States, clearly shows what the South African sailors, Paloma Werner and Ralph Mothes experienced when the 40-ton whale unexpectedly slammed into their boat, breaking the mast. The whale likely bruised and cut itself, but the sailors were unhurt. From a Los Angeles…
