Of the four miners trapped 300 feet (100 meters) down in a flooded coal mine in Wales, UK since yesterday, one has been reported dead. The three remaining miners are still caught behind a water and debris inside the Gleision Colliery in Wales’ Swansea Valley. So far rescue efforts by divers, aided by fire fighters and other emergency services, have been unsuccessful. A local councillor from Wales is quoted in the Guardian: This is the first mining disaster I have known for many years. There are not many collieries left like there used to be. However, it is a very worrying situation and it has shocked a lot of people. A plan to kill off some 1,500 badgers in the north Pembrokeshire area of Wales via trapping and shooting has been reversed by a Welsh appeals court. Many farmers and government ministers in Wales, concerned that bovine tuberculosis (TB) is being spread to cattle via badgers, supported the cull. On Tuesday animal welfare advocates, including the RSPCA and UK charity the Badger Trust, successfully appealed an earlier decision to allow the cull. The Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne, has founded an international project against ecological disaster, the International Sustainability Unit.
