Tropical storms are battering two parts of the world at present: the east coast of the United States and parts of East Asia. Hurricane Irene raged up from the Bahamas through North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and into New York, where it was downgraded to a tropical storm yesterday. According to the Associated Press Irene has claimed at least 21 lives in 8 US states. Two nuclear power plants in the US were shut down due to the hurricane, one in New Jersey (purely as a precautionary measure) and one in Maryland, which suffered minor damage. Haiti is facing yet another disaster as hurricane Tomas approaches its shores. While still fighting against the rise of cholera in and around Port-au-Prince, the Haitian Red Cross is now working together with Civil Protection officials to get the more than 1.3 million earthquake survivors to safer grounds and out of their current camps. In the meantime, Haitian authorities are on high alert, watching tropical storm Tomas gain strength as it moves towards the Caribbean. Weather forecast predict there is a 60 percent chance that hurricane Tomas will hit Haiti within the coming days.

Hurricane season is officially here: 16 people in Central America were killed by tropical storm Agatha. The storm hit land between Guatemala and Mexico, with wind speeds up to 45 mph (75 kph). Although the storm weakened to a tropical depression, it was still enough to trigger deadly landslides. One in Guatemala City killed 4 people and left 11 others missing; another killed 4 children in Santa Catarina Pinula, and in Quetzaltenango a loose boulder crushed a home–killing the 2 children and 2 adults trapped inside. On top of that, an additional 10 to 20 inches of rain was expected…

Tropical Cyclone Tomas hit Fiji’s northern islands Monday evening (local time) with winds of up to 275 km/h (170 mph) and heavy rain showers. Currently, there is no immediate report of extreme damage. The Category 4 storm is supposed to be the heaviest cyclone to hit the islands in the past twenty years, and it’s the second-most destructive on a five-point scale. As it heads northeast, it is expected to reach its peak force during the night of Monday to Tuesday and sideswipe the main island, Viti Levu. Predictions suggest that the cyclone will cause floods due to the heavy…
