Climate Change, Pollution, Recycling, Jul 13th, 2010,
Eco-warrior and youngest air to a banking fortune, David de Rothschild set out in April on a well-publicized trip from California to Australia aboard a vessel constructed from recycled plastic bottles. The raft, christened the Plastiki, is set to arrive in Sydney in about two weeks time. The purpose of Rothschild’s journey: To draw attention to marine pollution – particularly from plastics – and the overfishing of the world’s oceans. Oceanographers estimate that there may be as much as 100 million tons of plastic suspended in the waters of the eastern garbage patch, a soup of plastic and other trash…

Imagine a vessel made from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic soda bottles and you will have one of the most interesting creations (and story) of our time. The Plastiki started as an idea of David de Rothschild and thanks to further inspiration by the famous Kon-Tiki voyage (led by Thor Heyerdahl), the idea slowly became a reality. Since it would take a rather long time to explain the story and process of it all, you can read about it here (pdf file) and I’ll move on to the specs of it. To start with, you already know that it consists (mostly)…

Life and death work in mysterious ways and one recent incident in Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is proof of that. An Asian Elephant gave birth yesterday to a healthy, living, baby boy. Two days ago, you wouldn’t have known that. Two days ago, zookeepers and veterinarians both declared the elephant calf dead inside the womb. Apparently, the mother had gone through 6 days of labor, but nothing happened. Even the ultrasounds showed no possible chance of a successful birth. Well, it would seem that once again, nature had everyone fooled (except the baby and his mother). Not only was the baby…

Set your calendar aside for March 27th because another big climate change event is planned for that night. Earth Hour is set to return for another year, as millions of people across the globe switch off their lights for one hour in an annual campaign held to show the effects of climate change. At least 250 cities have already signed up for the event this year. Last year’s Earth Hour included international landmarks, such as the Las Vegas Strip, Sydney’s Opera House, and London’s Big Ben and Houses of Parliament going pitch black for the event. The campaign started in…

Australia Many of you have probably already heard about the dust storms that plagued Australia in September, coating the states of Queensland and New South Wales – including the cities of Sydney and Brisbane – in a haze of red Outback clay. Well, they’re back again. The Sydney Morning Herald reports today (October 13th) that the dust has returned, albeit to a lesser extent than the storms three weeks ago. Rains are hoped for by Christmas, but more dust storms are feared. This latest storm is the third in three weeks for western Queensland, according to another article in the…
