Carbon and methane stored in Siberia’s permafrost are being released as Russia’s Arctic experiences warmer temperatures, which cause the permafrost to recede. So far there is insufficient data to gauge just what percentage of methane in the atmosphere is a result of particular natural sources such as swamps and melting permafrost. Manmade sources of methane include power generation, rice farming, livestock agriculture and landfills. From a report by Russia’s BCM News: The fact is that the permafrost covers millions of kilometers of swamps. While melting, swamps send to the atmosphere tons of methane, which, in turn, leads to more significant…

Here are some pictures of the large bloom of blue-green algae currently covering 377,000 sq km of the Baltic Sea. The satellite picture comes from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the aerial photos are from the Swedish Coast Guard. Large carpets of algae create dead zones in marine environments and are a human health hazard because they spread cynanobacteria. Swimming in affected areas should therefore be avoided. From a BBC News report: This accelerated growth also reduces the amount of oxygen available to other plant and animal species in the affected area; raising fears that it could destabilise fragile…

An analysis based on national emissions targets suggests that global temperatures will rise by 4C (7.2F) by 2100. Six months after over 100 governments pledged to limit their countries’ emissions in order to keep temperatures from rising more than 1.5-2C (2.7-3.6F) above pre-industrial levels a major international study of over 60 nations, called the Climate Scoreboard, has calculated that temperatures are set to double if current targets are held to. Another study by Climate Analytics, at the Potsdam Institute in Germany, suggests there is “virtually no chance” world governments will keep the temperature rise to below 2C, and the rise…

The C.I.A is now working in cooperation with the U.S.’s top scientists, which include mainly academics, but also some from industry. The National Academy of Sciences, an ‘elite body that advises the federal government’, will be guiding the project, according to an article in the New York Times. The project gives the scientists access to government intelligence assets, such as satellite imagery, to assess environmental information. ‘Insights from natural phenomena like clouds and glaciers, deserts and tropical forests’ should provide a clearer and more complete view about the phenomena related to climate change. In July, the National Research Council of…
