A recent study by the American Psychological Association suggests that humans adopt a herd mentality when it comes to our behavior regarding the environment. Apparently fitting in is more important to us than doing the right thing or sometimes even surviving – at least when the threat is not immediate or is perceived as abstract. A herd mentality can be seen as a survival instinct – in humans as well as the animal kingdom. ‘An Australian psychology expert who has been studying emotions has found being grumpy makes us think more clearly.’ –BBC News Professor Joe Forgas of the New South Wales School of Psychology in Australia has some interesting ideas about mood. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology last April highlights evidence that gloomy dispositions brought on by bad weather actually sharpen the mind.
