The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has dropped its controversial plan to capture buzzards and destroy their nests in order to protect pheasants. Of course the pheasants wouldn’t be safe for long as the plan was to leave the pheasants to be killed by hunters instead of buzzards. A bit of meddling on the part of Defra so rich hunters can have more of a day out. Not really ‘Department for Environment’ concern, you’d think. It gets weirder. From the Independent: The Environment Department (Defra) planned to spend up to £375,000 researching ways to keep the…

White-tailed Eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. It weighs up to 6 kilograms, with a 2.5 metre wingspan. “During the period 1800-1970, White-tailed Eagles in most of Europe, underwent dramatic declines, and became extinct in many regions of Western, central, and Southern Europe. While Norway, Germany, Poland, and Iceland harboured the largest surviving populations, pockets of reproducing pairs remained in several other countries” – according to Wikipedia. The White-Tailed Eagle (Polish: Bielik, plural Bieliki) is considered Poland’s national symbol and it is believed that it’s this noble bird that appears on the Coat of…

Scientists recently made an eye-opening discovery at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa. Several nests of Massospondylus, a 20ft (6m) long sauropod, including fossilized eggs and hatchling footprints, is increasing scientists knowledge of the nesting, breeding and mothering habits of dinosaurs. The dinosaur nesting site is believed to be 190 million years old, some 100 million years older than any dinosaur nest previously found. At least 10 nests were uncovered at several different rock levels. Each contained up to 34 round eggs in tightly clustered clutches. The distribution of the nests indicated that dinosaurs returned repeatedly to the…

I have some good news about a rather large reptile that we don’t report about too often. Recently, there was a successful hatching of 13 Siamese Crocodiles! I never knew there was such a thing as a Siamese Crocodile, but apparently they are a critically endangered species that can dispersed throughout Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and possibly Thailand. Excessive hunting and habitat loss have been their main threats and it was only in 1992 that they were believed to be extinct in the wild; so, this hatching is an extra-joyous occasion. It all started with the discovery of a…

Beginning on Monday night, some 20,000 endangered Olive Ridley turtles stormed a beach in the Indian state of Orissa to lay their eggs. This year’s nesting began nearly a month later than last year, but this is not unusual, says a report in the Times of India. Unusual or not, late nesting means more eggs will die due to beach erosion that takes place during the summer, according to an article by ANI. Ports, terminals and offshore oil drilling also threaten the turtles’ survival. “Every year, almost 8,000-10,000 Olive Ridleys die. However, the nesting is going on and this time…
