Oil leak video + Deepwater Horizon rig officially a Marshall Islands vessel

oil-leak-video-deepwater-horizon-rig-officially-a-marshall-islands-vessel

It turns out that deepwater drilling off the coast of the United States is a pretty experimental thing. In recent years the industry has been largely self-regulatory, which has allowed them to cut corners and take advantage of loopholes in the law. For example, the Deepwater Horizon rig, leased by BP, owned by Transocean and built in Korea, is officially a vessel of the Pacific nation the Marshall Islands – because of that country’s lax maritime regulations. In other words the rig flies what’s called a ‘flag of convenience’. Corporate greed and our thirst for oil have facilitated compromises in…

Canada’s tar sands: Dirty crude at Europe’s pumps

canadas-tar-sands-dirty-crude-at-europes-pumps

According to Greenpeace, petrol stations in the European Union sell fuel derived from the oil sands of Northeastern Alberta, Canada. A Greenpeace report entitled ‘Tar Sands in Your Tank: Exposing Europe’s role in Canada’s dirty oil trade’ claims that petroleum products from the tar sands are regularly entering EU markets. Canada’s tar sands oil extraction project is considered by many to be one of the worst ‘ecocides‘ perpetrated against the environment. BP, in an effort to draw attention away from the Deepwater Horizon oil leak disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, has been talking up oil sand extraction as a…

Gulf oil spill update: BP containment dome foiled by deep-sea ice crystals

gulf-oil-spill-update-bp-containment-dome-foiled-by-deep-sea-ice-crystals

The quick fix that BP was hoping for by lowering a containment dome over the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico was not successful. Workers began the operation of lowering the metal container over the Deepwater Horizon oilrig leak on Thursday night, with hopes that it would staunch most of the flow of oil. However, a build up of ice crystals blocked pipes in the container, preventing the siphoning off of oil. From a report in the Guardian: The problem is blamed on methane gas, partly frozen into slush by the cold temperatures on the seabed at 1,500 metres…

Containment dome lowered in effort to stop Gulf oil leak

containment-dome-lowered-in-effort-to-stop-gulf-oil-leak

The latest effort to staunch the flow of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico – caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oilrig – is the lowering of a 5 storey-high containment dome over the leak. The lengthy operation began last night with the eventual hope that the dome would cut the amount of oil spilling into the sea by 85%. From an article in the Guardian that also features a video explaining the mechanics of the dome or ‘cofferdam’ solution: Engineers believe that the dome could be the best short-term solution to controlling the 220,000 gallons of…

Another inconvenient truth: US politics and oil spills

another-inconvenient-truth-us-politics-and-oil-spills

Environmental disasters tend to happen at really inconvenient times. Just after you open up a coastline to offshore drilling, a bothersome oil rig explodes and starts spilling a daily volume of hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude into a wildlife sanctuary. Awk-ward! US President Barack Obama’s cross-party overture regarding offshore drilling didn’t please many of his core supporters when he enacted it. Now that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is looking worse and worse every day, those feelings are strengthened. Obama has understandably put drilling plans on hold, effectively also putting domestic energy policy reform even more in…

The rig is spilling around 5,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf per day, some five times more than previously estimated. For more information watch this BBC News video report. Also check out the below video report from NBC’s Today Show on the oil spill’s coastal threat and what teams of workers – along with the US and local governments – are doing to combat the disaster. msnbc reports that US…
