Victims of crisis: Spain’s horses

victims-of-crisis-spains-horses

Back in 2010 I posted about how bad economic times in Ireland were resulting in a large amount of neglected and abandoned horses in the country. Now Spain, in the throws of economic crisis, is experiencing a similar problem. In Spain, as in Ireland, when cash was plentiful many horse-mad citizens splashed out on having their very own equine companion (or trophy as the case may be). But now that times are tough it’s old Sugar Foot who gets the boot. Curiously, sometimes it’s not old mares that are being, quite literally, put out to pasture, but expensive pure-red Andalucians….

From an AP report: Regulations for temporarily abandoned wells require oil companies to present plans to reuse or permanently plug such wells within a year, but the AP found that the rule is routinely circumvented, and that more…

2-borneo-elephant-calves-found-abandoned-but-why

There are strange things at work among the Borneo Elephant population as of late. Two female calves were found abandoned in Borneo recently. One was a 2-year-old stuck in a plantation moat and the other was a 6-month-old wandering in another plantation located in Malaysia’s eastern Sabah state. Both calves were starving. The shock of the matter is nothing like this has ever happened before—there is no known case of those elephant mothers simply abandoning their young. Laurentius Ambu, director of the state wildlife department, said that an official investigation is underway to find out what might have caused such…
