Video: Baby gorilla b-day at SD Zoo

I’m not a big fan of zoos, but I have to admit if it weren’t for these animal prisons (or conservation centers, whichever you prefer) I’d have never seen many of the fascinating animals we all know and love.
Of course, celebrating a gorilla’s 1st birthday is not really for the gorilla, even if he seems to be having a grand time. It’s about the spectators and the media. I guess it’s not that different from a human’s 1st birthday, though I’m pretty no reporters or throngs of gawkers showed up at mine.
Anyway, Monroe (son of Kokomo) now one-year old resident of the San Diego Zoo, received lavish gifts and a good time was apparently had by all.
From Our Amazing Planet:
Monroe was the first gorilla born at the Safari Park since 2001. His mother is Kokamo and his father is Winston. Western gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
For more on the San Diego Zoo gorilla birthday party see this article from California’s Imperial Valley News.

The Collapsing Ecosystem: What Happens During a Predatory Decline
Some of the world’s top predators are in the midst of fighting a losing battle. Wolves, lions and sharks are amongst those who are endangered, heavily hunted or poached, and quickly losing numbers. Since these big-time predators are falling in numbers, it has led to a major increase of mesopredators, or smaller predators, like foxes and snakes. These increases have also lead to large ecological and economic problems, with few solutions in sight. In North America, for example, all of the...
Genomic Project Considers Sunflowers as Ethanol Source
Flowers have been used in a number of environmental projects over the past year. Toyota created 2 new species of plants to help offset their emissions. France is planning on adding a bunch of nectar-bearing flowers along their roadsides to help honey bees. Now, there is a project turning towards a giant amongst flower-kind: the sunflower. The idea behind the Genomics of Sunflower project is the crossbreeding of a standard sunflower with the Texas Silverleaf species (one that grow up to...
Guatemalan Jaguars Have a New Obsession with Cologne
We’ve all seen them: The television commercials that try to convince us that a certain cologne or perfume will drive the opposite gender absolutely wild, as if the headache-creating aroma will unleash a person’s feral side. While that may not always (or ever) be the case for people, one scent in particular has played a rather interesting role in the tracking of Jaguars: Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Men cologne. It was discovered after an experiment conducted by the WCS (Wildlife...
Top 7 tips to green your coffee habit
Yes I admit I’m an avid coffee drinker. I love the taste and the smell of fresh coffee, especially in the morning. If you’re like me, this top 7 list of great eco-tips will help you enjoy your coffee beans and spare the environment at the same time. 1) Use reusable filters instead of paper ones. Reusable filters come in many variations and forms, from organic fabrics to stainless steel over gold plated versions. Any of those will do great in reducing...
Road freight is unsustainable
Haulage, or the commercial transport of goods by road, aka road freight, is a little discussed, but important environmental issue. The environmental impact of haulage is considered to be significantly higher than freight by rail or sea, due to its heavy production of pollution and greenhouse gasses. The damage and congestion inflicted upon roads is also an expensive burden on infrastructure. Haulers – 'hauliers' in the UK – drive massive trucks called semis, tractor-trailers, 18 wheelers or big rigs in the...
Top 5 Hottest Places in the World
Summer is officially here! That means it’s time for beach getaways, camping trips, amusement parks and barbecues. It also means it’s time for sweat, sunburns, and sweltering hot temperatures. Sure, a relaxing day at the beach has some appeal, but when you factor in temperatures of 85 F (29.4 C) or higher, that appeal tends to disappear pretty fast. When we get stuck outside in that nasty summer heat, we’ll wish for any form of cooling—be it a breeze, a...
Fire Destroys World’s Largest Collection of Dead Snakes, Scorpions and Spiders
Some people want their work to be remembered and shared with the rest of the world for centuries to come; in many cases this involves going down in a blaze of glory (so to speak). Unfortunately, sometimes that blaze is real and will consume all those years of work. A fire destroyed the world’s largest scientific collection of dead snakes, scorpions and spiders. The collection, located at the Instituto Butantan in Brazil, was almost a century-old and included nearly 80,000 snakes...
Illegal Chinese medicine trade fuels brutal rhino poaching
Africa’s rhinos are facing a constant threat due to poachers and trophy hunting. The increasing demand for rhino horn used in traditional Chinese medicine – especially in new markets such as Vietnam – is fueling an illegal trade involving corruption and organized crime. In a recent poaching attack in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, poachers entered a wildlife reserve via helicopter and cut the horns off of a drugged white rhino with a chainsaw. The rhino miraculously survived the brutal...
A drought big as Texas
As droughts cause famines in poor parts of the world like Somalia, they also affect the developed world, albeit in less catastrophic ways. France and the UK have worryingly dry areas, but nowhere so much as the US state of Texas. Have the ‘water wars’ already come to the United States? Well, maybe not, but things look bleak and even downright apocalyptic in parts of the state. Never a wet place, climate change and population growth in arid areas do not...
