Rare lizard survives long-haul flight and machine wash
Posted by Graham_Land in Animals, Weird & Wonderful, Wildlife & Flora, 8 Feb 2012
A rare Chioninia lizard from Cape Verde climbed into a tourist’s luggage before she boarded her flight from the African islands to the UK. The lizard survived a 3,000-mile (5,000 km) flight in a cold luggage hold, followed by a machine wash cycle at the tourist’s home in Somerset, UK.
Sue Banwell-Moore found the lizard after removing her washing from the machine. She assumed it was dead until it surprisingly recovered.
From the Guardian:
I was hanging out the washing on the clothes dryer and I looked down and there was this lizard there. I thought he was dead and I’m sure he nearly was – I have absolutely no idea how he was still alive.
The lizard, which has been nicknamed Larry, is now residing at a UK wildlife park.
The park’s director is quoted by BBC News:
It is very rare – Cape Verde islands is one of those places with native species found nowhere else in the world, it’s so remote.
Humans have only inhabited Cape Verde since their discovery in the mid 16th Century. The islands are home to several rare endemic species of birds and reptiles, some of which are now threatened due to human development. Others, such as the giant skink (also a Chioninia lizard) are now extinct.

Oil spill cover-up in Egypt’s Red Sea?
Last month an oil spill was discovered in Egypt’s Red Sea by Egyptian authorities. The spill polluted a stretch of coastline dotted with popular tourist resorts. According to a Reuters Africa report, the Egyptian oil minister has claimed that none of the 188 oil platforms in the Gulf of Suez are responsible for the spill and that the oil may have come from water used to clean out a tanker. Local environmental groups are skeptical of the Egyptian government’s claims and are...
Vertical farming: Just crazy or so crazy it just might work?
In Monday’s Guardian George Monbiot slams the concept of ‘vertical farming’ in a piece, entitled ‘Greens living in ivory towers now want to farm them too’. His main beef is that a Columbia University parasitologist named Dickson Despommier has been getting a lot of support in the green media for his idea to create skyscraper farms in densely populated urban areas like New York City, which might be a brilliant idea, but it’s a fanciful one as well. This immediately reminded me...
Movies Released with a Strong Environmental Message
Creating awareness among the people of nation has become the most necessary task these days. The awareness can be about diseases, environment, human beings etc. But the environment is what the focus is kept on and people have tried their best possible ways in creating the awareness among public regarding the environmental issues. The movies are one of the best sources of creating awareness among people and have come out to be a really good source of delivering strong environmental...
Planet Blow: Surfers warm about coming ecological disaster
Nick de Wannemaeker, Belgian windsurfing champion and O’Neill rider who - I’m very proud to say - is my cousin (well actually my husband’s cousin but who’s counting), stars in a dark, epic surf movie highlighting the ecological disasters at hand if we don’t evaluate and change our approach to and relationship with nature. The movie called Planet Blow is a small independent film, produced and directed by Sylvain Demercastel (artist, musician, director and also an O’Neill rider), about the adventures...
Primate inebriates descend on South African vineyards
Last month it was reported in the Telegraph how clever baboons in South Africa have learned to recognize the door-locking signal ‘beep’ before deciding whether or not to break into cars parked at a popular tourist spot in Cape Town. This month the buzz is that baboons are raiding the vineyards of Cape Town’s wine country on a daily basis and entering the city’s exclusive suburbs in search of easy pickings. Sometimes the baboons even gorge themselves on grapes that have partially...
13 Countries Convene in an Effort to Save Asia’s Wild Tigers
If you’ve been keeping up with all the tiger news coming out lately, then you are probably aware that they face a crisis situation; especially those throughout Asia. In an effort to help save the tigers, 13 countries are currently convening at the first Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation. Their aim is to convince other countries to pledge to help the tigers, by setting population targets to help increase their numbers and also providing more funds towards tiger conservation efforts. The...
„Earth 2.0” does exist!
NASA scientists for the first time managed to confirm the existence of extrasolar planets present in the so-called ecosphere - the zone around the star where there are favorable conditions for the emergence of life, such as liquid water. A unique planet could be seen through the telescope Kepler (a space based observatory) whose one of the tasks is to search for Earth-like extrasolar planets. - This is a milestone on our way to finding Earth’s twin sister, said excited Douglas Hudgins...
London 2012: The Greenest Olympics Ever?
When London bid for the 2012 Olympics against other cities like New York, Paris, Madrid and Moscow, they touted that if the Summer Olympics were to be held in their city, it would be the first environmentally friendly games ever. Perhaps the Olympic Committee was quite convinced, as London won in the final round, beating Paris by 54 to 50 votes. Looking at the history of the Olympics, the games were really so much simpler when they first started (and it...
The changing face of the planet: ‘Mega-regions’ rule
The world's wealth, science and tech are increasingly concentrated in so-called 'mega-regions' – the merging of large cities into industrialized and urbanized areas of over 100 million inhabitants. According to a UN-Habitat report, mega-regions already exist in Japan, Brazil and China – the largest being the Hong Kong-Shenhzen-Guangzhou region – and are forming in Africa and India. From an article in the Guardian: The UN said that urbanisation is now "unstoppable". Anna Tibaijuka, outgoing director of UN-Habitat, said: "Just over half the...
Media oversimplification of climate change frustrates scientific community… and me
“There is no newspaper or TV that has the actual job or goal of enlightening the population about how the earth system works. They have the goal of making money as the bottom line and selling their newspapers. So expecting journalists to do this job for us when they are being paid to earn money for a newspaper isn’t correct, it isn’t going to happen,” –Katherine Richardson, professor of marine science, University of Copenhagen (from ABS-CBN News) The oversimplification of...
