Stranded container ship Rena breaks in half near New Zealand’s coast
Posted by Murielle in Pollution, 8 Jan 2012
The cargo ship that ran aground on a coral reef off New Zealand’s coast last October broke in half yesterday. Continuous storms of the past several days created a crack in the hull that turned fatal yesterday when heavy storms and 6-meter high waves caused the ship to break in two.
While the bow of the Rena is still firmly stuck on the coral reef, the tail of the ship is now floating some 30 meters away.
The 900 containers that were still on the Rena have now fallen into the sea. As a result, experts fear this will further aggravate what is already known as the worst environmental disaster in the history of New Zealand.

Feeling Greenwashed? Spot the Spinner!
Brainwashing has been prevalent in media for while now. America’s enemies during the war (pick whichever you prefer) were doing it way back since the black and white era of film noir. Then the aliens arrived and are reputed to be at it even now, if one is to believe the X-files. And last but not the least, the soda companies allegedly sneak in subtle messages on cinema screens to make you run out and buy. But now it’s the...
Scientists: Russia’s fires and Pakistan’s floods fit climate trend
While individual events like heat waves, cold snaps, floods and droughts cannot be attributed to man made climate change on an individual basis, scientists at the World Meteorological Association (WMO) say global warming exacerbates the intensity of recent extreme weather. The floods in China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the heat wave and resultant wild fires in Russia and the intense rain in central Europe all point to the fact that extreme weather events have tripled since 1980. From an article by Reuters: Recent extremes include...
Sea Shepherd Whaling Activist Arrested by Japan
The Japanese Coast Guard has arrested an anti-whaling activist of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for "vessel invasion" after he boarded a Japanese whaling ship last month in the Southern Ocean. The activist, Captain Peter Bethune, from New Zealand, boarded the Japanese ship, the Shonan Maru 2, on February 15, and presented the captain of the ship a bill for $3 million in damages incurred when the Japanese vessel collided with and sunk the Sea Shepard trimaran, the Ady Gil. Immediately...
Egypt Announces Plans to Go Solar
When it comes to Egypt, most news reports tend to be about the latest archaeological findings. This report is not about that. This great desert nation will finally have its first solar energy plant by the end of the year. The plant will be one of only 4 plants with a 140-megawatt capacity in the entire world. As with many other nations jumping on the green bandwagon, this effort is part of Egypt’s plan to reach their target goal of having 20%...
Herbie the Elm may Help Scientists Learn More About Climate Change
Tree huggers, lovers and fanatics may have heard about the great American elm named Herbie. Herbie lived in Yarmouth, Maine and was approximately 110 feet tall. He had a 20-foot circumference and a 93-foot crown spread. Oh, and he was there since (roughly) 1798, making him over 200 years old. After living over 200 years and surviving 14 bouts of Dutch elm disease, Herbie was finally cut down. Two weeks ago was the time of his passing and since then, many...
C.I.A. takes on climate change
‘Its charter is not the science of climate change, but the national security impact of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts, and heightened competition for natural resources.’ -CIA Center on Climate Change and National Security The CIA is planning to open a center with the aim of informing leaders about the relationship between security and climate change. The center will analyze environmental information and its effects on political, economic and social stability overseas. According to a New York Times...
Wolves Go Through Their Own Mid-Life Crisis
It may surprise some to learn that wolves are a lot like people. They have a strong sense of family. They tend to stick with the same mate for life (or until one of them dies). They use their body language and vocalization to communicate with others. And they also go through their own type of mid-life crisis. Yes, you middle-aged men and women are not the only species in the world that go through that crazy patch in your life...
Breaking News: Another Big Earthquake Hits Haiti
Earthquakes seem to be all the rage in Haiti this month. Little over a week ago, a 7.0 earthquake killed 200,000, wounded at least 250,000, and left 1.5 million without homes. Now, after more than 40 aftershocks, another quake attacks the small island—and this time it’s a 6.1. The previous earthquake wreaked most of its havoc throughout Port-au-Prince. This latest one, which occurred in the early dawn hours of today, was centered approximately 35 miles (60 km) northwest of the city. The...
