More flooding in Europe: Southwest England under water
Posted by Murielle in Climate Change, Nature, 17 Nov 2010
Last weekend we reported that parts of Belgium and The Netherlands were flooded due to torrential rains. In the meantime, the situation in those countries is slowly returning to normal. But it seems the rain showers are not over yet.
After heavy rainfall its now Southwest England that is battling floods. Police and military are working together to get people into safety, evacuating them by helicopter from their cars or houses.
The towns of St Austell and St Blazey are the worst off. A Mudslide near Lostwithiel made train transport to Cornwall impossible while the town of Mevagissey, completely surrounded by water, is being evacuated.

Mediterranean Mammals on the Decline: One in Six Face Extinction
Six degrees of separation may not be such a good thing for the animals of the Mediterranean. One out of every six Mediterranean mammals is threatened with extinction at the regional level. Out of 320 mammal species assessed for the IUCN Red List, 49 were threatened. This includes 20 species that are not found anywhere else in the world. To break this down even more, three percent are critically endangered, five percent are endangered and eight percent are vulnerable. According to IUCN...
Latest on Iceland volcano: Navy sent to fetch stranded Britons, Kenyan farmers feel effects of flight ban
The Telegraph reports that the ash cloud from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano that lingers over much of Europe could continue to be blown over the UK until Friday, but specific conditions will depend on wind directions and the height of the ash plume. An article in the Guardian tells of how the UK government is attempting to find solutions for the massive amount of British tourists and travelers stuck overseas. Bus, ferry and train services have all increased their capacities, while an...
Energy saving Green tips: doing the dishes
Everybody hates doing the dishes, right? Actually, some weirdos like it, but those people should be avoided at all costs. Or married. I mean someone has to scrape my fossilized muesli off the soupspoons, don’t they? May as well be someone who likes it. Now I’ve always assumed that modern luxury appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and massage chairs were as a rule bad for the environment and labor saving rather than energy saving. Apparently not so, according to this article...
UK: No ban on circus animals
Despite 70% of the British public supporting a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses, the UK government has failed to enact such a ban, opting for stiffer regulations instead. The circus animal debate heated up last month when undercover footage was released of an elephant in a British circus being beaten with a pitchfork. One the one side are animal welfare groups and most UK voters. On the other stand circus owners who reap great financial benefit from...
Population, poverty, food prices and deforestation are all on the rise. Any solutions?
Half of the Earth’s forests have already been cleared or degraded. A lot of this former forestland is used for growing food, but much is unused or underused. All the while more deforestation is taking place in order to feed a growing global population and to increase economic development. A new study argues that these degraded forests could be either reforested or put to productive use, instead of cutting down more virgin forest. In Brazil, reports show that deforestation rose immensely in...
500 dead penguins found on Brazil beaches
Over a period of only 10 days, more than 500 dead penguins have washed ashore on Brazilian beaches. The penguins’ bodies exhibit signs of death by starvation. During the past few years Magellanic Penguins have been discovered on of the beaches of Rio de Janeiro state with increasing frequency. For some reason – perhaps due to pollution and/or overfishing – they sometimes become lost while migrating north from Antarctica and Patagonia in search of food. But those penguins – a few...
The winners and losers of carbon trading
While carbon trading may serve to limit overall emissions, how does it affect local pollution? A Time Magazine article from last December explores arguments against the UN's carbon trading scheme, known as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) including its susceptibility to manipulation by national or local governments. It also may outsource pollution. Take this case in India: "Since the plant has come, the village's water supply is polluted, and the air is polluted from the dust and smoke," says KSL Swamy, the...
Germany: Protests against nuclear power extension highlight public opposition
Germany’s cabinet has voted to extend nuclear power use in the country by an average of 12 years. According to legislation passed in 2002 by the Social Democratic-Green Party coalition, all nuclear power stations in Germany were to be decommissioned by 2022. Not any more. German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Christian Democratic Party, which rules as part of a center right coalition, sees the extension as a way to generate tax income, while meeting greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and transitioning to...
Govt risking UK lives by relaxing air pollution standards
The ‘Greenest government ever’ strikes again. According to official figures pollution contributed to some 200,000 premature deaths in the UK in 2008, a number with disproportionate victims in poor, urban communities. Furthermore, health care costs total £20bn per year for pollution-related ailments. And now the UK’s Conservative-led government wants to relax air quality standards and shift responsibility from national to local authorities. Standard Tory stuff, right? From the Independent: Poor air quality is caused by three main pollutants - nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and...
Creature Feature: The American Burying Beetle
This week’s Creature Feature turns to a species class that many people are not exactly fond of—some people even fear them—but they deserve their turn in the spotlight all the same. The American Burying Beetle, or Giant Carrion Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus), is a critically endangered species and native to North America. They are between 25 and 45 mm in size (roughly 1 to 2 inches) and have a shiny, black body with orange-red markings. This creature is carnivorous and it’s food—and breeding...
