More flooding in Europe: Southwest England under water
Posted by Murielle in Climate Change, Nature, 17 Nov 2010
Last weekend we reported that parts of Belgium and The Netherlands were flooded due to torrential rains. In the meantime, the situation in those countries is slowly returning to normal. But it seems the rain showers are not over yet.
After heavy rainfall its now Southwest England that is battling floods. Police and military are working together to get people into safety, evacuating them by helicopter from their cars or houses.
The towns of St Austell and St Blazey are the worst off. A Mudslide near Lostwithiel made train transport to Cornwall impossible while the town of Mevagissey, completely surrounded by water, is being evacuated.

Dutch Inventor Creates Awesome Device to Aid with Plant Growth
One Dutch inventor is proof that anyone can make a difference when it comes to the environment. Pieter Hoff, a former flower exporter turned invetor, has created the Groasis Waterboxx. This nifty invention makes it possible to grow trees and bushes in the most unlikely places, such as on rocks, across deserts, throughout eroded areas, and so forth. How? The Groasis Waterboxx acts as a water incubator by producing water from an internal condensation process. The process is caused by artificial...
Giant beaver dam visible from space
A massive beaver dam discovered in the forests of Northern Alberta, Canada is the world's largest. So big that it is visible from space, the dam – located in Alberta's Wood Buffalo National Park – measures 2,790 feet (850 meters) long. Known as 'nature's builders', beavers construct dams out of mud, stone and timber in order to give themselves still, deep water for access to food and protection from predators. Beavers also build lodges within the calm waters created by the...
Superbug factories: Industrial meat and dairy farms could be the death of us all
No matter if you eat a 5 pounds of meat per day or are a strict vegan, intensive livestock farming is putting your life at risk. This is due to the routine and preemptive use of large amounts of antibiotics on factory farms, which contributes to the evolution resistant strains of bacteria like MSRA. In the US, MSRA is believed to be killing more people than AIDS. For years the medical profession has come under criticism for overprescribing antibiotics or doling...
Did you know? 1 out of 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness.
Mental Illness Awareness week was created by Congress in 1990 and it supports the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The aim of the week is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and dispel some of the fears we have about people with mental illness. The University of Southern California created an infographic, "Facing Mental Illness," showing some mind dazzling numbers. Brought to you by MSW@USC Masters in Social Work...
Global Warming in 5 steps: How does it affect Wildlife?
When it comes to global warming, humans have certainly felt the effects, and this year more than ever. With one weather disaster after another hammering the globe (there were a dozen in the U.S. alone that topped the billion-dollar mark for damages), there’s no denying that the natural course of the climate has been altered due to the many greenhouse gas emissions we spew into the air courtesy of industry and transport. And the results of our pollution are not...
FOCUS // CHINA – By All Costs: The Battle to Save China’s Rivers
If I don't take any risks, if I don't make some sort of contribution, the work won't be rewarding. There is a Chinese poem which says that a divine view is beheld from a perilous peak. -Wu Deng Ming, Chinese environmental activist ‘Black River - China’ is a documentary released in June 1996 by ABC Australia and distributed by Journeyman Pictures concerning the polluted Huai River basin, at the time home to 1/10th of China’s population. According to the report,...
London’s cycle-hire scheme: What’s the deal?
On Friday London begins its well-publicized bicycle rental scheme, introduced by mayor Boris Johnson, run by London Transport and sponsored by Barclays plc. Over the past few years London has become more cycle-friendly with more bike lanes and cycle paths, reducing stress on public and private transport – which have both become more costly, thereby encouraging more people to travel by bike. But despite recent growth in cycle traffic, London still trails other British cities and lags astronomically behind the European bicycle Meccas of...

Breaking News: 40,000 activists march on Copenhagen for climate justice
With only one week to go for the UN climate conference, thousands of demonstrators showed their concern for the environment yesterday (Saturday, December 12th) in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, site of the COP15 summit. Though many news sources such as CNN, the BBC, the Guardian and the London Times initially had the figure as 'thousands' or even 'tens of thousands', the southern Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan reported an impressive tally of 40,000 protesters. Sydsvenskan, which is headquartered only a short...
