Short documentary film on animal abuse in Chinese circuses
Posted by Graham_Land in Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 30 Aug 2010
‘The Performance’ is a disturbing, but important film about animal abuse in China’s zoos, circuses and animal parks.
In conjunction with a new report by Hong Kong-based Animals Asia, ‘The Performance’ exposes the cruel treatment of animals such as black bears, big cats, monkeys and elephants for the entertainment of live audiences, who are unaware of the suffering they are supporting. The film is part of an effort to get animal welfare legislation laws – of which there are none in China – drafted and passed.
Beaten throughout its life, declawed, de-toothed and kept in unsanitary conditions – this is the life of a Chinese circus animal.
Watch ‘The Performance’, hosted by Terry Waite, British humanitarian and former hostage of 4 years:

Bonn climate talks highlight rich-poor divide
The climate talks in Bonn, Germany are emphasizing cleavages between wealthy and poor nations characterized by mistrust and a clash of priorities. While the poorest nations are the most vulnerable to droughts, floods, and a rise in sea levels; they have contributed the least causes of climate change. There are fears that the $30bn (€25bn/23bn) – pledged by wealthy countries to poor nations to help with the effects of climate change at last December's climate talks in Copenhagen – may not materialize...
Eco-quizzes – how green do you score?
Prove your eco-knowledge or humiliate yourself by exposing your green ignorance with these short quizzes on the environment. Don't cheat by googling and no do-overs! Start with this eco-quiz called 'Clearing up the smog' from CNN Earth's Frontiers, which aims to shed light on 'energy myths'. I am slightly ashamed to say that I got only 7/10 questions correct, but some of them were tricky. I was still awarded 'boffin' status so I don't feel too bad. I then scored an embarrassing...
Breaking: Gulf leak worst US eco-disaster ever, may continue until August
US President Barack Obama's energy advisor Carol Browner has called the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 'the worst' environmental disaster to ever hit the United States. Browner also warned that the leak might not be stopped before August. The amount of oil leaking from BP's Deepwater Horizon oilrig has now surpassed 1989's Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. From a BBC News report: At least 20 million gallons have now spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, affecting more than 70 miles (110km)...
New study highlights plastic waste in the Atlantic
A recent study attempting to measure the amount of plastic debris in the Atlantic has shed more light on the scale of this type marine pollution and its effects on ocean ecosystems. The findings, which analyze data collected from 22 years of oceanic surveys, list several impacts of plastic on marine life, including animals becoming entangled in plastic debris, animals eating plastic and debris facilitating the redistribution of certain species outside their normal habitat. From an article in Wired: The data were gathered...
Animal Barcoding Provides Whole New World of Information
Picture yourself working for an inventory company. You are at a store scanning barcodes, one by one, when suddenly you come to an item that will not register on your machine. It’s not because the barcode is invalid, it’s because you’ve stumbled upon a new kind of barcode used to study animals. Technology has been rapidly expanding over the years, and now there’s a whole new way to discover and track animal information. Through genetic testing, scientists can track changing patterns...
UK forest sell-off update: Public outcry shelves govt plan
The UK government has put its plans to sell off vast tracts of publicly owned forestland on hold. The scheme to privatize 258,000 hectares or 1,000 square miles of forest is part of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government’s harsh program of spending cuts, tax hikes and other actions with the expressed aim of lowering the UK’s large budget deficit. According to a BBC report, the British government is currently allowed to sell of 15% of public forests per public spending period –...
Last month hottest June ever
June 2010 has gone on record as the hottest June since temperatures have been documented, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The scientific body’s National Climatic Data Center records go back to 1880 and also show the January-June and April-June periods to be the warmest ever recorded. Though temperatures were warmer than average throughout much of the globe, Peru, central and eastern US and both eastern and western Asia experienced the most markedly hotter temperatures. Southern China,...
Toxic China-made drywall forces families out of their homes
China-made drywall causes over 2,100 homeowners in Florida, Louisiana and Virginia to move out of their homes for health reasons. Most of these houses were built between 2005 to 2007 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Wilma during which a shortage of US-made building materials occurred due to massive rebuilding and construction. A recent study by Intuitive Environmental Solutions LLC in Florida, revealed that the homes with Chinese drywall contained high levels of hydrogen sulfide and formaldehyde, which leads to...
1 ship=50m cars: That’s how polluting ocean freight is
I’ve assumed that transport via boat, whether shipping goods or people, is less polluting and has a lower carbon footprint than flying or road freight, for example. Not so, according to both scientific research and inside information from the maritime shipping industry. While diesel cars – once known as smelly, noisy polluters – have relatively cleaned up their act to the level of standard petrol or gasoline-fuelled cars, the heavy-duty diesel and low-grade fuel oil engines that power ships are a...
And Now for Something Really Interesting…
Last week, a rather interesting critter was discovered in Perth, Australia. The creature appeared to be nothing more than a common Shingleback, or skink lizard. Well, with one exception: the lizard has 2 heads. The lizard is currently being cared for at a reptile park in Henley Brook. Unfortunately, two-headed lizards don’t have particularly long life spans and it probably doesn’t help that the larger head has been occasionally attacking the smaller one. This particular two-headed lizard eats from both heads,...

I know, Sammie. And this isn’t even “behind the scenes” stuff. A lot of the footage is witnessed by the crowd. I wonder how they feel watching that cruel nonsense live and in person.
I feel sick. All I see is broken hearts and many lifeless existences. The bear that dropped it’s head for not jumping the skipping rope got me the most. It was scared! It was so scared!
