Last week, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) announced plans to add 75,000 more acres to their Wetlands Reserve Program. The acres are located throughout 22 states (mostly in the south and Midwest) and Puerto Rico.

Wetlands are an important habitat to many species and also rather vital to our own well-being. They filter contaminants from the water, prevent flooding and soil erosion, and play other key roles that benefit the environment.

On top of the added protection, the USDA will also provide approximately $175 million in funding to the 22 states and Puerto Rico, too. Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, stated:

“Healthy wetlands play several critical roles in protecting our environment, including: improving water quality, preventing flooding and soil erosion, and creating and maintaining the best possible wildlife habitat. Farmers, ranchers and other private landowners play a critical role in protecting our wetlands, and the funding announced…will provide even more opportunities to maximize wetland values and ensure that these important natural resources survive for generations to come.”
