Climate change debate back in the news
In the wake of a summer that spawned harsh heat waves and forest fires in Europe; and catastrophic floods in China, Pakistan and elsewhere in Asia, climate debate is back in the news. Debate about the significance or even existence of anthropogenic global warming featured prominently the headlines last winter during the UN climate conference in Copenhagen, the ‘Climategate’ scandal the IPCC and the Met Office were embroiled in; and when parts of Europe and the US experienced unseasonably cold temperatures. These...
Major oil disaster in China’s Yellow Sea
Friday’s oil pipeline explosion in the northern Chinese port of Dalian has resulted in a large oil slick in the Yellow Sea. The oil leaking from the two exploded pipelines has been stopped, but not before oil washed up on the coastline, soiling surrounding beaches and negatively impacting local wildlife and economic activity. Thousands of firefighters, engineers and even a flotilla of 800 fishing boats are involved in cleanup operations which have already reduced the oil slick by a third from...

Summer is coming to an end and that can only mean one thing: it’s time to go back to school. Whether it’s your first year in grade school or your last year of college, you’ll have a lot of work to look forward to. Rachel Maddow on how big corporations disguise themselves as ‘nonprofit’ organizations and social activists
Ever wonder why there is such confusion – especially in America – regarding what is healthy, what is safe, what is environmentally friendly… whether global warming and climate change are even real? Well a lot of it is comes down to PR, political lobbying and money. Whoever has the most cash has the loudest voice: in terms of publicity and unfortunately, political power. Rick Berman, a PR lobbyist who is paid to campaign under the mask of social activism by setting...
Creature Feature: The Jellyfish Tree
Yes, this week’s feature is about a tree! If you thought Creature Feature was only going to be about the animal kingdom, you were wrong. Plants of all kinds will be covered here, too. Why? Well, although they may not necessarily move or speak like us, they are still living things and they are very important to the environment. Do not forget that millions of creatures (including people) depend on plants for food, shelter, oxygen, and so forth. Now, the Jellyfish...
Obama admin backs down on smog controls
Smog kills. This is a well-established scientific fact. Unhealthy ground ozone levels contribute to and exasperate allergies and asthma. Cities like London, England and Los Angeles, California are particularly bad places to live in terms of air quality. London has the worst air quality in the UK, while Los Angeles – according to the American Lung Association – is the smoggiest region in the US. US President Barack Obama’s administration looked as if they would tighten controls on ozone levels in the...
(Clean) Waterworld? Kevin Costner’s company signs deal with BP to help clean up Gulf
Hollywood actor Kevin Costner's company has formally been contracted by oil spilling giant BP to use 32 of its oil cleaning centrifuge machines to assist in cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. Costner has invested $20m (£13.5m/ €16m) in the company, whose oil separating machines remove 99% of crude from contaminated water. From an article in the Guardian: The devices, manufactured by Ocean Therapy Solutions, are carried to the spill area by barges before separating the oil and water. The largest of...
High School Students Develop Artificial Tree
Two junior high school students from Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science has garnered attention for their designs of an artificial “tree” – a creation made from metal which absorbs carbon dioxide. The first working model of these "artificial tree towers" should be done by June of 2010. This technology is by no means new, but the teens hope that making their own artificial tree, they could pave the way for small-scale consumer efforts in the future. Read the full...

Earth Hour: Join the World in Total Darkness to Fight Climate Change!
Set your calendar aside for March 27th because another big climate change event is planned for that night. Earth Hour is set to return for another year, as millions of people across the globe switch off their lights for one hour in an annual campaign held to show the effects of climate change.
