Cape Farewell unites the arts with climate change science in the frozen Arctic

“Climate change is a reality. Caused by us all, it is a cultural, social and economic problem and must move beyond scientific debate. Cape Farewell is committed to the notion that artists can engage the public in this issue, through creative insight and vision. The Arctic is an extraordinary place to visit. It is a place in which to be inspired, a place which urges us to face up to what it is we stand to lose.” -David Buckland, 2007 (from capefarewell.com)

Cape Farewell is a venture in which visual artists, writers, designers, architects, composers, photographers, directors and other arts professionals team up with scientists to communicate their findings to the public in a cultural context. Artists involved in the Cape Farewell project include writers Ian McEwan, Vikram Seth and Nicole Krauss, musicians Feist, Jarvis Cocker and Riuichi Sakamoto as well as a host of others from the arts world. Founded by artist David Buckland in 2001, Cape Farewell has lead seven expeditions into the high Arctic in order to experience first hand the effects of climate change. Fruits of these expeditions include: a 60-minute film entitled Art from the Arctic (2008), a book of images, artwork, texts and essays called Burning Ice and Climate Change, musical recordings, writings and several international art exhibitions.

Besides exploring the frozen (or unfrozen) Arctic, Cape Farewell also went to the Andes and the Amazon in Peru last June to examine the effects of growth and development on the unique ecosystems there. Author of Life of Pi Yann Martel was along for that journey and wrote about it for CNN’s Going Green.
