Solar Badge (Image source: ecofriend.org)
The advent of eco-friendly mobile phones made from sustainable materials and powered by renewable energy resources has a lot of people eagerly anticipating its public release.
However, since most mobile phone are mostly kept inside bags or pockets integrating solar panels to power the mobile device is rendered impractical.
A Chinese industrial designer helped develop a solution for this problem, the green badge. Made up of a solar cell module, it will harness solar energy which will then be stored in a built-in ultra thin battery. This leaf-like device is designed to be clipped on clothes or bags and can be used to charge the mobile phones. Read the full article here

Met Office wants scientists to step up and be clear about climate change
The cold snap or 'big freeze' disproves global warming. The heat wave the UK experienced last June proved it was real. Sometimes what's obvious or 'crystal clear' is anything but. Climate change and global warming are – precisely as their names would suggest – global phenomena concerning climate, and not local weather events, as many apparently believe. And so the UK's Meteorological Office – commonly referred to as the Met Office – would like climate scientists to better inform the...
Bullfighting vs. fire bull tradition exposes political hypocrisy in Spain
The parliament of Catalonia voted to ban bullfighting in July, a move that enraged Spain’s bullfighting community and drew accusations of Catalan nationalist motivations rather than concern for animal welfare. Well, plainly both nationalism and animal welfare played their parts in the ban – apparent by the fact that groups from both camps participated in the anti bullfighting campaign. But on the different, yet similar issue of fire bulls in Catalonia, the groups are more split. In the Catalan town of Amposta, bulls...

Gisele Bundchen is not only one of the highest-paid models in the world, the Brazilian beauty is now also set to launch an eco-friendly skincare line. The 29-year-old supermodel, who gave birth to a baby boy last December, is going to present her eco-friendly product line “Sejaa Pure Skincare” next week. The line of products is said to use all-natural ingredients and to provide eco-friendly packaging and recycled paper. This is not the supermodel's only new project. Soon after she gave...
Space Elevator: 36000 km into space in a week
The Japanese construction company, Obayashi Corporation, has stated that they will design and construct a space elevator by the year 2050. Initial plans have already been developed and they are currently working on its appearance and technical operation. The construction of the elevator will be possible thanks to small cylindrical structures called carbon nanotubes. "In Obayashi's vision, a cable would be stretched from a spaceport on Earth's surface up to an altitude of 96,000 km (60,000 miles), or about one-quarter of the distance...
Chinese city fights pollution with bicycles
Chinese city streets used to be thronged with virtual seas of cycling commuters. Not so anymore. In fact China has recently surpassed the United States as the largest automobile market. The decline of China's bicycle-culture has been lamentable, but at least one Chinese city is looking towards the past for solutions for the future. Hangzhou, a sizable city on the China's east coast, is attempting to balance economic growth and development by implementing a free communal bicycle-sharing program. The bikes resemble...
Galapagos Islands: Global Warming’s Next Prey
The effects of climate change are finally reaching this volcanic archipelago; the very place that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Well-known for its rich and fragile biodiversity, the Galapagos are beginning to feel the damage Global Warming can cause. Sea temperatures are changing, and coral reefs have been dying near the islands. Not only that, an increase in tourism and illegal, overfishing are also having negative impacts on the islands. Shark and fish populations have dropped drastically due to illegal...
Space Age Environmental Design: My Pet Robot
Electrolux, that’s right, the Swedish vacuum cleaner and washing machine company, is sponsoring some clever designs for the future. One finalist, Le Petit Prince by Martin Miklica of Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, is presumably named after that weird French children’s book. It’s a cute little robot with a single human-looking eye and a glass dome that resembles a vacuum tube. Must be the Electrolux connection (ha ha ha). Ahem. Inside Le Petit Prince’s glass bubble lives...
California’s green schools
At Leo Politi Elementary, a public school in inner city Los Angeles, California, students learn about wildlife in a 5,000 square foot (465 square meter) oasis of native flora and fauna. The school is located in a crowded, economically disadvantaged neighborhood – more of concrete jungle than a real jungle. But three years ago the school decided to clear a concrete area and turn it into an space for native California fauna. Soon insects and birds came to take advantage of...
Energy saving Green tips: doing the dishes
Everybody hates doing the dishes, right? Actually, some weirdos like it, but those people should be avoided at all costs. Or married. I mean someone has to scrape my fossilized muesli off the soupspoons, don’t they? May as well be someone who likes it. Now I’ve always assumed that modern luxury appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and massage chairs were as a rule bad for the environment and labor saving rather than energy saving. Apparently not so, according to this article...
