Powerful mudslide in Italy leaves one person missing
Posted by Graham_Land in Nature, Videos & Documentaries, 11 Sep 2010
Heavy rains caused a destructive mudslide in a small village on Italy’s Amalfi coast, resulting in one missing person.
A torrent of water and mud covered cars and flooded streets in the village of Atrani when a small river burst its banks after Thursday’s rains, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The missing person was working in a café in the popular tourist village when she was swept away by the torrent of muddy water.
For more on the story, including dramatic footage of the mudslides and subsequent cleanup efforts, see the following video report from Al Jazeera English:

Fish restoration success in Pacific Northwest
photo: USFWS Pacific (Flickr CC) In Port Angeles, Washington State, USA a rare wildlife success story is taking place. The first wild steelhead trout has been seen in 100 years, since the construction of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams. Efforts by government scientists and members of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe to repopulate fish in the Elwha river (previously obstructed by the dams) have included releasing coho salmon and steelhead trout into the wild. But what surprised them most was...
Radio Wave Experiments Create Artificial Ionosphere
We have been spending so much time worrying about the Earth and its problems that we may sometimes forget all about the wonders of the sky. Luckily, not everyone has given mother all of the attention. The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) has been conducting some experiments lately, with rather interesting results. Based near Gakona, Alaska, HAARP has been testing a variety of radio wave experiments for the past 20 years. An obvious and typical result of these experiments...
Reducing your carbon footprint – a checklist
The key to a green future is doing a little at a time, and considering all the options At this point we’re past the stage where energy saving and renewables are talked about as something futuristic and unobtainable or something for sandal wearers and lentil-eaters. Solar panels are appearing on many suburban homes, wind turbines a common site on farms and new commercial buildings and wind-farms, heat pumps and tidal power generators and a smorgasbord of clever new technologies are popping...
Biofuel BS: Stop the violation of poor communities
Tanzanian villagers were promised much-needed infrastructure, water security, money, education and health benefits from UK Biofuel firm Sun Biofuels in return for their land. 1,000 inhabitants of Kisarawe villages in Tanzania gave up thousands of hectares of land in order that Sun Biofuels could grow jatropha, a biofuel plant. But Sun Biofuels did not follow through. The villagers have instead suffered health and safety violations, poor salaries, followed by redundancy and no improvements in infrastructure or water security. In fact, things have...
The Great Tweet Forward? Climate concern highest among youth in China
Will the youth of China and Brazil lead the way in the new environmental ‘Great Leap Forward’ while British and American young people languish in egomaniacal tweets and preposterous dreams of stardom, not giving two cares about the future of the planet? A recent survey by the Carbon Trust attempts to measure concern about CO2 and climate change in young populations around the world – and the results may surprise you. The scope of the survey focuses on the awareness and consumer...
Update: More ways to help tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan
In addition to Google Person Finder’s 2011 Japan Earthquake service and ShelterBox’s aid program for victims, several other organizations are mobilizing to help those affected by the recent tsunami and earthquake in northern Japan. Japanese authorities have upgraded the quake to a 9.0 on the Richter scale. I have been keeping up to date on the situation via the Guardian’s live news blog, where it was posted that Save the Children has set up a fund for Japan’s earthquake/tsunami victims. You...
Young, blessed and couldn’t-care-less: Age of Stupid or stupid age?
Here is an extra clip from Age of Stupid director Franny Armstrong's The Stupid Show in which young citizens of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are interviewed about environmental attitudes in their country. This could easily just be seen as a typical 'laugh at the rich kids' bit of reality TV. There is nothing exclusively Emirati about how these young people feel about environmental issues and how they live their lives. After all, Paris Hilton didn't become an international star...
Eco-travel and Tourism: Getaways for Any Time of the Year
With the seasons changing and weather becoming colder, people may be looking for that last vacation getaway for the year; or if you’re a snowbird, looking for where you’ll be spending the next several months. Going on vacation is no reason to stop “living green” or doing your part to help the environment. Here are a few rather unique hotels that specialize in eco-travel and tourism. Deep-sea census yields 17,000 new species
Life in the deep sea is just as weird and wonderful as any alien creatures from outer space that our imaginations might conjure up, a massive study of marine biology shows. Comprising of some 210 expeditions spanning ten years by over 300 scientists from 34 nations, the international Census of Marine Life is in fact the culmination of 'hundreds of years of research'. Very little is known about ocean life when compared to the eco-systems on land, especially the deep,...
Climate Change Poses Growing Threat to Health Conditions
Climate Change is becoming a growing concern when it comes to health issues. Last week, a group of federal agencies issued a report on the threat climate change poses to health, analyzing what areas need to be studied. The report, published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, basically states that the climate will force people to “negotiate with their changing environment as never before to find ways to reshape it both for short-term protection and long-term alleviation of...
