The most dangerous species in the Mediterranean
Posted by Murielle in climate change, 25 Feb 2010
An awareness poster from the Catalonia Department of Environment (Departament De Medi Ambient) reads:
All around the world, 8 million tonnes of waste reach the sea EVERY DAY. All this refuse is generated by human activity. This non-recyclable rubbish is thrown into the toiler, onto the streets, into gullies, onto the sand and into the sea, turning it into a tangible destroyer of marine life. But you can stop this from happening.
Uncontrolled waste is a thread to the seas
I find it quiet striking… how about you?

India to Launch 2 Satellites Exclusively for Monitoring Daily Environmental Changes
India’s Minister of State for Environmental and Forest, Jairam Ramesh, recently announced plans to launch 2 satellites that will be specifically used to monitor environmental changes in the country. The first satellite, which will be launched in 2012, will monitor daily carbon emissions; while the second satellite will monitor India’s forest cover—also on a daily basis. Both satellites will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organization. According to Ramesh: “Currently, forest cover in the country can be known only after two years...
Saturn’s hazy moon: Could there be life on Titan?
Methane lakes, an orangey atmosphere and a 'creme brulee-like' surface make Titan – the largest of Saturn's moons – sound almost inviting. The European probe named Huygens reached Titan aboard NASA's Cassini spacecraft in January of 2005. It has been sending signals Earthward ever since. What's so remarkable about Titan is its resemblance to Earth. The main differences are that Titan is much colder and has vast bodies of liquid methane instead of water. The fact is that if Titan were not so...
London Provides Free Drinking Water!
Remember the small, Australian town that ditched bottled water for free water usage? Well, it would seem London may be the next to take up the initiative. Hyde Park recently opened a new water fountain. Funded by a private developer, it’s the first free fountain in the park in 30 years, and already seems to be a big hit with local children. HydraChill—a company focused on the importance of environmental and health issues—is also developing water machines to be placed in...
Wild in the streets: Deer in the UK
Growing up in suburban Washington, DC, I saw my fair share of wild animals; raccoons, grey squirrels, possum, muskrat, etc. Deer on the other hand, were a relatively rare site. That is until around the mid to late 90s, when the local population just exploded. Suddenly they were in the yard eating our flowers in the middle of the day. Car accidents involving deer went way up in my area. Once I almost hit a giant stag that had run straight...
Environmental Conflict: Desert Tortoise vs. Solar Power
For decades, perhaps centuries, there has been one great, never-ending battle: the expansion of man and industry vs. the preservation and existence of all other natural life. What happens when you pit two factions on the same side against one another? Big problems, that’s what. California’s BrightSource Energy company has been pushing for permission to erect 400,000 mirrors on part of the Mojave Desert for a solar-energy project. This project would be the first of its kind on US Bureau of...
Solar powered Spain
Solar power is a hot project in sunny Spain. Outside of Seville you'll find the world's first commercial solar tower, which appears like a modernist church spire surrounded by an adoring flock of robotic minions. The minions are in fact mirrors – or heliostats – which reflect sunlight onto a receiver located at the top of the monolithic tower. A CNN article explores the PS 10 and forthcoming PS 20 solar power tower projects in Spain: Each heliostat measures 120 square meters,...
Obama admin backs down on smog controls
Smog kills. This is a well-established scientific fact. Unhealthy ground ozone levels contribute to and exasperate allergies and asthma. Cities like London, England and Los Angeles, California are particularly bad places to live in terms of air quality. London has the worst air quality in the UK, while Los Angeles – according to the American Lung Association – is the smoggiest region in the US. US President Barack Obama’s administration looked as if they would tighten controls on ozone levels in the...
Wild Sumatran Rhinoceros Displays Signs of Pregnancy!
For a bit of good news in the Asian animal kingdom, there might be a new member of the Sumatran Rhinoceros family! A camera set up in Borneo captured a picture of a female rhino on February 25th of this year. Given the size of the rhino, it is very possible that she may have been pregnant at the time. The image is the first ever to be taken of a wild female Sumatran Rhinoceros thought to be pregnant. Raymond Alfred...
COP16 breakthrough: China ready to commit to a binding climate treaty
Last Monday’s Climate talks in Cancun could lead to a breakthrough in the climate negotiations. China, one of the nations most looked at in Cancun, has made a proactive offer to have its personal reduction targets binding by submitting them to an international United Nations resolution by the end of the week. By doing so, China is taking on a very positive and flexible position, and maybe even providing a way out of negotiations blocked by many different factors. Offering to...
A lesson on quality craftsmanship and sustainable design from a 44 Year-Old Toaster
Tim Hurst shares his fondness for heirloom pieces, particularly his prized vintage “Coronado” toaster. Manufactured by the now defunct Gamble-Skogmo Inc. in Minnesota, he purchased it for only $2 at a yard sale. Initially, he estimated that the chrome-wrapped toaster must have been four or five years old because it was still in pristine condition until he saw a message tied to the toaster that said: “THIS TOASTER WAS A WEDDING GIFT IN 1965. IT HAS BEEN USED DAILY SINCE THEN....
