The most dangerous species in the Mediterranean
Posted by Murielle in Climate Change, 25 Feb 2010
An awareness poster from the Catalonia Department of Environment (Departament De Medi Ambient) reads:
All around the world, 8 million tonnes of waste reach the sea EVERY DAY. All this refuse is generated by human activity. This non-recyclable rubbish is thrown into the toiler, onto the streets, into gullies, onto the sand and into the sea, turning it into a tangible destroyer of marine life. But you can stop this from happening.
Uncontrolled waste is a thread to the seas
I find it quiet striking… how about you?

The environmental gold standard: Rising prices bring ecological disaster
In several gold producing countries, recent increases in the value of the mineral have resulted in disastrous environmental consequences.A BBC News report highlights how gold mining in the south east of Peru– much of it illegal and therefore unregulated – is resulting in rainforest deforestation, mercury contamination and the illegal trafficking of women. Close to 200 sq kms (77 sq miles) of jungle have been lost in the evocatively named Madre de Dios (Mother of God) region. –BBC News Mercury – cheap and...
Video: Gorilla family reunion
Gorillas at Longleat Safari Park, photo by Generalnoir (Flickr CC) Two gorilla brothers were successfully reunited at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, UK. Alf and big brother silverback Kesho – now 200lbs (90kg) heavier – met after being separated for two years. Their cheerful reunion was captured on video and in a series of photos, which can be viewed on the BBC News website. Mark Tye, head gorilla keeper at Longleat Safari Park, Wiltshire, is quoted in Metro: They were touching each other through...
Want to Stop Climate Change? Go Get Arrested.
In an effort to put pressure on global leaders to pass a solid, well-founded global treaty at the upcoming COP-15, the Yes Men group is organizing 10,000 protesters, who are willing to get arrested for the cause. This event is going to be the largest civil disobedience act against climate change in history, and rightly so. Last week, the Yes Men passed out fake issues of the New York Post strewn with pro-climate action stories and launched Survivaballs. It is uncertain...
Study: Methane is Rapidly Leaking Through Holes in Arctic Permafrost
For the longest time, CO2 was considered the main culprit in global warming. Many would pin climate change issues on this particular greenhouse gas. However, it seems another such gas intends to make its presence feared all the same: Methane. This greenhouse gas has been sneaking its way into the atmosphere more rapidly than scientists previously thought; especially in areas of the Arctic Ocean where there is unstable permafrost. An international research team conducted a survey of the East Siberian Arctic...
Germany Considers Solar and Wind Power Cutbacks
Germany has talked about cutting back on solar energy support and withdrawing wind power supplied to Taiwan as of late. The question is: Why? According to a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party, their reasoning for cutting back on supporting the solar energy industry is because they don’t want the market to overheat. Germany is the world’s leading market for solar panels. They guarantee decent prices for solar panel owners who also sell electricity; however, over a 20 year...
The way we react to climate change may be making it worse
The headline in The Ecologist, ‘Human response to climate change is making matters worse’, is a bit of a f*&#(^@ downer. Upon reading the actual article, it doesn’t get that much better. A recent study has researched the impacts of human response to climate change on biodiversity. The study, recently published in the journal Conservation Letters, attempts to assess the impact of responses such as the biofuel industry, which has contributed to the destruction of rainforests and peat bogs in South East Asia....
Breaking Update: 4 Missing Miners Found Dead; Bodies Shattered From Explosion
After a long week of worry, hope, fear, and stressful conditions, the search for the 4 missing miners finally came to an end. None of them survived. Governor Joe Manchin stated: “We did not receive the miracle that we prayed for." ... “The rescue workers told us they’re sure no one suffered.” ... "So, this journey has ended and now the healing will start." All 4 bodies were shattered by an explosion that happened in West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine earlier...
Videos on green development in southern China
Pollution poses significant problems in China's rapidly industrializing landscape. As urban areas grow and develop with unprecedented speed, the environmental consequences of modernization are often an afterthought. But such afterthoughts must eventually be dealt with – sooner or later. On the tails of a massive revolution in development, China is also in the throws of a 'green revolution' where the Asian giant is increasingly confronting its environmental challenges in more creative and impressive ways. The southern city of Shenzhen in Guangdong...
6 Days ’til Earth Hour. Have You Pledged to Switch Off Your Lights?
In one week, people around the globe will be plunging themselves into total darkness to celebrate Earth Hour. Earth Hour is one of the WWF’s global initiatives. It’s also the largest climate change event in history. Last year’s event had over 4,000 cities around the globe participating—including 80 million people from the US alone! Even extremely well-known landmarks and tourist destinations have gone completely dark for this big event, including: The Golden Gate Bridge, The Great Pyramids of Giza,...
Class and sex have a large influence on whether you are a climate friend or climate foe, Swedish studies find
According to an article in the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan, men are more likely to be enemies of the environment, while women tend to be more climate-friendly – at least in Sweden. Men drive cars and fly more, while women cycle and take trains and buses more often than men. The other big indicator as to whether one is more apt to have a more 'climate smart' lifestyle is class, and it may not be in ways you might expect. The...
