Across the globe it’s once again humans vs. wolves. This timeless battle has changed its face from hunters and farmers simply shooting wolves in order to protect their livestock and assuage their communities’ fears, whether real or imagined. It’s now a confusing mix of laws, politics and technology. Wiped out, endangered, protected species… it doesn’t matter. While humans can’t get enough of their domesticated off-shoots (dogs, incase you don’t catch my drift) many still hate and fear wolves. In the US, where local and national laws often collide confusingly, some wolves in some parts of the State of Washington are…

Alaska’s main animal predators are now at risk of being shot from helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. It is already legal to bait and snare bears in Alaska, a practice even some hunting advocates find inhumane. In order to increase the hunting of caribou and moose in the state, Alaska’s Board of Game has lifted a ban on the aerial shooting of grizzly bears, a threatened species in most US states. State wildlife officials may now cull grizzlies by shooting them Sarah Palin style – from the sky. But its not just the bears that are at risk. It is…

A recent court ruling restored the protection of the Gray Wolf (or Timber Wolf) under the Endangered Species Act. Unfortunately, their victory may be short-lived. Idaho game officials plan to gain federal approval to kill hundreds of these wolves, despite their restored protection status. The plan they are so hellbent to put into action would mean cutting the state’s overall wolf population by more than 40%. One particular group of wolves they intend to target would be cut by 80%, from 100 members down to a meager 20. It’s also likely that Montana will follow suit and try to put…

The Mexican Gray Wolf may finally be getting the much needed protection it deserves. Earlier this year, WildEarth Guardians filed a lawsuit against the US Fish and Wildlife service in an attempt to force the agency to issue a finding. This past week, a federal judge in Arizona approved a settlement that requires the agency to issue a finding by the end of July. This finding is based on a petition that seeks to obtain an endangered species listing for the Mexican Gray Wolf that is distinct from the other Gray Wolves of the US. The petition in question was…

Mexican Gray Wolves are in trouble—and more than they should be at this point. Ten years ago, the federal government started to return this endangered canine to its Southwestern home. Unfortunately for the wolves, it hasn’t been working out. Their clash with local ranchers has gotten particularly out of control. Throughout the last decade, four ranches went out of business and four more are expected to by next summer. The southwest has been hit by severe droughts, ridiculous cattle prices and some nasty wildfires over the last 10 years. The wolves have also been blamed for killing hundreds of livestock…

It may surprise some to learn that wolves are a lot like people. They have a strong sense of family. They tend to stick with the same mate for life (or until one of them dies). They use their body language and vocalization to communicate with others. And they also go through their own type of mid-life crisis. Yes, you middle-aged men and women are not the only species in the world that go through that crazy patch in your life (some of which never get past it either). A recent study finds that a wolf’s ability to hunt peaks…
