Hurricane force storms ripped through parts of the United States this past Friday, felling hundreds of trees, causing several deaths and resulting in large scale power outages in the Washington, DC capital region of the United States. In the hours following the storms some 1.5 million were without electricity in the DC area, with as many as 3 million on the eastern seaboard. Temperatures soared as high as 105F (40.5C) in some places. The storms began on Friday evening following a day of record-setting temperatures, shattering the previous record set nearly 80 years ago. A temperature of 104F (40C) was…

I grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC in the 70s and 80s, when deer sightings in the area were not common, though not exactly rare occurrences. By my mid 20s, however, they were everywhere – munching on my mother’s daffodils or dashing into the street to get hit by an SUV. The reason for this is two-fold. First of all, suburban sprawl means the deer’s forest habitats shrink and keep shrinking in the face of unstoppable, endless developments of McMansions. The other reason is a nationwide population explosion in deer, whose predators (bobcats, coyotes and wolves) have been…

Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, Dec 16th, 2011,
We’ve got two silly animal videos today, courtesy of ITN (and neither are about those gay penguins who recently ‘broke up’). First there are the waving bears of the Olympic Game Farm in Washington State, US. These retired Hollywood film bears (read: slave animals) are tame Kodiak bears who, when waved at by gawking tourists, politely wave back. Bit of a gimmick, but at least they no longer have to take orders from Steven Spielberg and can instead lie around waving at caravans of naked apes. Check out the video here: So… from a bit of news about animals who…

Climate Change, Science & Technology, Videos & Documentaries, Feb 13th, 2010,
It seems to be the logic of some right wing ‘journalists’ and uninformed people that the amount of snow falling in certain places lately – though noticeably not at the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics – somehow debunks the science of global warming or climate change. What’s being referred to as ‘snowpocalypse’ – I guess that’s all they could come up with – has virtually shut down my hometown of Washington, DC. Luckily I live in London now, where people usually freak out at the sight of a lone snowflake see-sawing its way onto the perpetually sodden earth, where…
