Two gorilla brothers were successfully reunited at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, UK. Alf and big brother silverback Kesho – now 200lbs (90kg) heavier – met after being separated for two years. Their cheerful reunion was captured on video and in a series of photos, which can be viewed on the BBC News website. Mark Tye, head gorilla keeper at Longleat Safari Park, Wiltshire, is quoted in Metro: They were touching each other through the cage that temporarily separated them and there were no acts of aggression. We put them together 24 hours later and it was like they had…

After posting about sharks yesterday I stumbled upon a remarkable and tragic story containing humans and sharks, which occurred just last week. Three men left on a ill-fated fishing trip on the night of August 9th off the coast of Western Australia. Then tragedy struck. Two of the men were pulled from shark infested waters, one found naked after treading water for 20 hours. The other man was later pronounced dead. The third, the nephew of the (so far) lone survivor, is still missing. Read more about the situation in WA Today and watch the following video of the rescue.

I stumbled upon this amazing video while ‘YouTubing’ last night in search of funny and fascinating animal clips. After watching a few old favorites including the stylish interior decorating skills of the bowerbird and the lyrebird, which can imitate all the other birds in the forest as well as camera noises, chainsaws and car alarms with near perfection, I found a story about a bird that dances like Michael Jackson. In my opinion, he dances more like James brown than MJ, shuffling back and forth and sliding sideways down the branch, but far be it from me to quibble over…

4 people have been reported dead and around 50 injured due to an earthquake that struck northern Italy in the early hours of the morning. The quake struck just 4am, just 35km (22mi) north of Bologna, at the relatively shallow depth of about 10km below the surface. Several historical sites were damaged, including churches and a medieval castle. From BBC News: It was felt across a large swathe of northern Italy, including the cities of Bologna, Ferrara, Verona and Mantua and as far away as Milan and Venice. See the following Al Jazeera English video report for more: Meanwhile…

Well, we can’t always post serious news. Here are a couple of cute videos demonstrating how pets help their owners in unusual ways. We’ve all heard of the dog that fetches the morning paper and the cat that catches mice or keeps your feet warm (if you can’t bear the thought of a dead mouse). And now for something completely different. How about a Newfoundland Labrador in Norfolk, UK who helps his owner thatch roofs? He’s a thatcher and his name is Axel, not Margaret. OK, so he doesn’t actually do any work, but he sits on the roof and…

Popocatépetl, meaning Smoking Mountain in the indigenous Nahuatl language of central Mexico, is at it again. Only 70 km (43 mi) southeast of the capital, the volcano is visible from Mexico City on a clear day – and by ‘clear’ I mean a lesser variety of extreme smogginess than normal. Popocatépetl started spewing lava rocks and columns of ash almost 10 days ago. The world-famous active volcano has also been roaring loudly, causing concern among local residents. Though so far no evacuations have taken place, the government of Puebla state issued warnings for locals including to not leave animals outdoors, cover water…

A rainbow coalition of indigenous groups and social/political activists recently hit the streets of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, in protest of large-scale mining projects approved by the country’s president Rafael Correa. Correa praised the Chinese mining project, claiming they will bring 50,000 jobs and billions in revenue. Though Correa is popular in Ecuador, the project is facing opposition. Ecuador has already suffered a massive oil spill in the Amazon region, and some 50% of the country is already covered by mining and oil extraction projects. So Ecuadorans are understandably wary of more major mining operations. See the following video…

The aurora borealis, or ‘northern lights’ is an amazing phenomenon that occurs when a solar wind of charged electrical particles enters the Earth’s magnetic field. When these particles hit the Earth’s upper atmosphere above the Arctic region, the atmosphere produces an incredible spectacle of spectral multi-colored lights that ‘dance’ in the night sky. NASA has recently released a time lapse video composed of some 500 photographs of the aurora borealis taken by digital cameras on the International Space Station. From BBC News: By combining hundreds of stills taken from the International Space Station, they have produced the first ‘moving’ images…

Over 2,000 meters beneath the surface of the Southern (aka Antarctic) Ocean lives a colorless collection of newly discovered life forms. The animals that make up this ghostly white ecosystem survive without sunlight, instead living off minerals and energy from volcanic vents, which make waters as hot as 382°C (720°F). That’s pretty hot, especially considering it’s deep-sea Antarctica. From the Christian Science Monitor: Unlike vents in other oceans, the Antarctic vents lack tube worms, mussels and shrimp. Instead they harbor new species of barnacles and anemones, as well as a large brown spiral-shelled snail. The researchers even saw ghost-pale octopuses, which…

It’s not often that hurricanes or tropical cyclones threaten northern Europe. But last week Hurricane Katia did just that, after growing in strength from a tropical depression in the Atlantic and heading towards Ireland and the UK. When Katia arrived in Ireland and Scotland she was no longer officially a hurricane, but still produced gusts of 85mph (137km/h) and heavy rains causing damage and travel disruptions. Damage in the UK alone was estimated to be at around £100,000 (€115,000 or $154,000). In the aftermath of tropical storm Katia a heartwarming story of rescued red squirrel babies is making the rounds….

Here’s a trio of environmentally-themed videos to get you through the rough midsummer days and nights, take your mind off government austerity measures and remind you of the wondrous complexity of our natural planet. We’ll start off light-hearted and work our way towards more serious issues. First up we’ve got an Antarctic penguin that got lost and swam around 2,000 miles / 3,000 km off course to end up on a beach in New Zealand. (If video won’t play go here) Next we head to Brazil, where evidence of another isolated Amazonian tribe has been found near the borders…

The biggest solar flares in five years have been witnessed and filmed by NASA cameras. The flares, which are eruptions of high-energy radiation on the surface of the sun, may cause satellite disruptions. While some tabloids – like the ironically named Sun – are claiming that the filmed blast is “expected to cause a massive geomagnetic storm when it reaches earth”, possibly knocking out power supplies, the more sober Telegraph quoted NASA’s solar dynamics observatory in their description of the flares as “visually spectacular”, but resulting in “fairly small” effects down here on terra firma. Check out the following ITN video…

Hawaii’s Kilauea, one of the world’s most famous and most active of volcanoes, is erupting again in impressive fashion, shooting lava 80 ft (25m) into the air after collapsing a large crater. No homes have been threatened but the area surrounding the volcanic eruption has been closed off to visitors. Officials in Hawaii warn that an even larger eruption may be in store. Furthermore, according a report by Reuters the US Geological Survey recorded 150 small earthquakes that occurred along with the eruption. A 490-meter fissure also opened up on the eastern side of the volcano, shooting lava some 20…

When I was a kid “Supercuts” was just a place to get a bowl haircut for $5, but across the pond in 2010′s Britain it means something completely different: “austerity” and Big Society – a.k.a. big tuition fees to keep the riffraff out of higher education, cementing the dominant number of old school ties in the House of Commons lockers. Check out this DIY short film by Carbon Diaries author Saci Lloyd featuring the UK’s dynamic duo. Is Clegg having a crisis of faith or a twinge of regret due to selling out the Lib Dem agenda? Watch and see……

A tidal bore is when waves of water rush through a narrow passage against the natural current of a body of water. Tidal bores are actually tidal waves, which are often mistakenly confused with tsunamis. Sometimes the phenomena of seawater being funneled through a river mouth can be quite spectacular, such as the annual tidal bore in China’s Qiantang River. From ITN News: Each year, just after the mid-Autumn festival, when the moon is at its fullest, a huge waves rolls along the wide mouth of the Qiantang near Hangzhou in China’s eastern Zhejiang province. Watch this dramatic video footage…

A special report from France24 explores current conditions in the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. As BP is preparing to permanently seal the damaged well in the Gulf, the local community, environment and economy struggle to recover as oil and dispersant pollution continues to inflict damage. The France24 report explores BP’s ongoing influence in the Gulf of Mexico, including the legal and scientific communities there, the flow of information about conditions on the ground and in the water; and the oil giant’s shoddy, superficial cleanup efforts. Scientists in the Gulf States were…

Two freshwater dolphins were recently rescued from a Bolivian river after being trapped there for months due to low water levels. The smallish dolphins weigh between 30 and 40 kilos (66-88 pounds) each and were among a group of nine river dolphins which have been stranded in a Rio Grande tributary for over a month. The rescue operation is ongoing. From an Associated Press report: The two dolphins were caught in nets and brought to shore. They were put in padded, water-filled aluminum containers and driven on all-terrain vehicles about two miles downstream, where they were put in a pen…

Brush fires and strong winds have resulted in a rare fire tornado in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The firestorm occurred in the city of Araçatuba in the northwest of São Paulo state. The region has experienced humidity levels similar to the Sahara Desert From a report by the Associated Press: A whirlwind of flame, spiralling several metres high, danced across burning fields, bringing traffic to a halt on a nearby highway, before it dissolved, as rapidly as it appeared. Though the fire tornado was brief, drought conditions are still feeding brush fires in the state. It hasn’t rained…

According to a report in the Independent, at least 11 of the 58 whales that beached themselves on Karikari Beach in Northern New Zealand on Thursday night have been successfully refloated. The reports differ about the number of saved pilot whales – the Associated Press reports that only 9 survived and 4 were euthanized: The survivors had headed out to sea Saturday afternoon and were monitored to ensure they did not return to the beach, Conservation Department spokeswoman Carolyn Smith said. But within an hour four of them became stranded again, Smith said. Furthermore, the estimated total number of deaths…
