Basically vegetarian: Facebook’s Zuckerberg vows to only eat what he kills

basically-vegetarian-facebook%e2%80%99s-zuckerberg-vows-to-only-eat-what-he-kills

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to only eat meat that he kills with his own hands. For most softies in the rich, developed world this would mean becoming a vegetarian by default. Unlike exceptions such as Ted Nugent and other rugged hunter-fisher types, we are either too squeamish, too lazy or in some cases too compassionate to kill our own food. We’d prefer to forgo such barbarism and hard work, pop a tofu burger in the microwave and watch TV. But the CEO of Facebook (in case you haven’t noticed) is not like most of us. If we are…

More on how industrial livestock farming and food production are destroying the environment

more-on-how-industrial-livestock-farming-and-food-production-are-destroying-the-environment

Two rather informative articles from Mother Jones go over the environmental benefits/drawbacks of a vegetarian diet vs. one that includes lots of meat. Kiera Butler’s ‘Steak or Veggie Burger: Which is Greener?’ – aka ‘Get Behind Me Seitan’ – may tread some familiar ground for those well versed on the relationship between diet and the environment, but it offers up some pretty important details, especially about processed meat substitutes. A processed ‘pea-burger’ requires as much energy as a pork chop, Butler claims. I don’t know what a pea-burger is, but I’m guessing she is referring to the bulk of industrially…

Doing our bit: Rise of the veggie footsoldier

doing-our-bit-rise-of-the-veggie-footsoldier

During the last few days the British press has run some relatively prominent articles once again highlighting the correlation between meat eating and climate change, also resulting in a few additional commentary pieces and the usual backlash. Perhaps biggest of all is the Observer Food Monthly magazine’s OFM vegetarian recipe special edited by none other than the McCartney family (Sir Paul, Mary and Stella). Far from simply a collection of recipes – including several from Gwyneth Paltrow and other veggie celebs – the OFM special contains interviews with each of the three McCartneys, plus one piece that specifically connects environmentalism…

New UN report says diet high in meat and dairy is ‘unsustainable’

new-un-report-says-diet-high-in-meat-and-dairy-is-unsustainable

A UN report entitled ‘Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Consumption and Production’, released Wednesday, states that eating less meat and dairy is necessary to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change, global hunger and energy shortages. From an article in the Guardian: As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable, says the report from United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management. There’s been a bit of a back and forth regarding how much the meat and dairy industries contribute to…

Rise of the veggie robots: Steampunk for real?

rise-of-the-veggie-robots-steampunk-for-real

It’s science fiction meets Victorian technology. The US military may be going a bit steampunk by funding the development of a robot that gathers its own fuel by foraging. The robot would run on biomass – like wood, leaves or grass – or whatever other fuel source it could gather by itself, which would in turn power its own steam engine. From the Economist article ‘Vegetarian robots: Munching machines’: The EATR uses a robotic arm to gather and prepare vegetation, which it feeds through a shredder into a centrifugal combustion chamber, where it is ignited and then heats a series…

‘Eat less meat to stop climate change’ – British Government continues to link diet to environment

' src='http://gf1.statico.be/wp-content/themes/greenfudge/thumbnails/2378.jpg' alt='eat-less-meat-to-stop-climate-change-%e2%80%93-british-government-continues-to-link-diet-to-environment' class='art-teaser' width='95' height='95' />

Britain seems to be one of the more forward-thinking nations when it comes to issues like animal welfare, ecology and climate change. Of course they were also the first industrialized nation and so arguably responsible for many of the root causes of today’s environmental problems. Still, you have to give them their credit: they are starting to stick it to the factory farming industry. November 25th‘s Evening Standard featured a prominent story about the link between livestock farming and climate change. Echoing earlier statements by former government advisor Lord Stern, a new government report calls for a ’30 per cent…

Environmental crisis: Veggies to the rescue!?

environmental-crisis-veggies-to-the-rescue

Is eating your greens going to save the earth? This could have been a ridiculous question about a decade ago. But now, it’s even got a serious answer! It is estimated that if more people switched to eating more vegetables, than it can probably reduce our carbon emission by up to 18%. Of course this isn’t going to cut it with die-hard carnivores, who will probably say you can take away their hamburgers when you pry it from their cold, dead hands. We need to back it with hard proof, kind of like defending the label “smoking is injurious to…

U.K. eco-news: Government officials support vegetarianism

u-k-eco-news-government-officials-support-vegetarianism

Vegetarianism has made significant inroads into mainstream British culture. Issues relating to animal welfare have long played a part in the social and political fabric of the United Kingdom. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or RSPCA, dates back as far as 1824. English Romantics Percy and Mary Shelley were vegetarians and naturalists during the early 19th century, demonstrating a link between the Pythagorean diet – as it was known for centuries throughout Europe – and early environmentalism. Even further back – in 1516 – Sir Thomas More wrote and published Utopia, an early novel describing…

The Vegetarian Spiders of Mexico

the-vegetarian-spiders-of-mexico

They only eat plants and their males may even help look after the kids. No, they’re not Californian soccer dads, they’re Mexican spiders. Central America’s jumping spider, or Bagheera kiplingi – named for a character in Kipling’s Jungle Book – outwits and outmaneuvers a wasp-like species of ant, which guard acacia bushes in a symbiotic relationship that the jumping spiders don’t participate in. They just want to eat the sweet leaves of the shrub and then jump somewhere else. Of all the 40,000 known species of spiders, the Bagheera kiplingi is the first and only known vegetarian species of spider….

Vegetarian Spider Likes to Hunt Plants

vegetarian-spider-likes-to-hunt-plants

I have an extreme case of arachnophobia. The mere sighting or mentioning of a spider makes me cringe—and flee the area, if possible. When I found out that yet another spider species was discovered and to be added to the list of over 40,000 already found, I was not a happy camper. But, as I read further about this new critter, I made some discoveries of my own that made it seem a bit more fascinating and a little less scary, for a change. The Bagheera kiplingi—as it was called—resides down in Central America. This eight-legged jumper is about the…

Tips for saving the environment: Small steps towards tiny carbon footprints

tips-for-saving-the-environment-small-steps-towards-tiny-carbon-footprints

It is a common misconception that in order to help save the environment, you have to radically alter your current way of life so that it conforms to the new ethical standards of environmentalism. While it is true that driving cars and flying around in airplanes pollute the Earth and contribute to global warming, there are many ways we can offset the damage we do in our decadent gas-guzzling, jet set lifestyles, that can reduce our oversized carbon footprints. And they are surprisingly simple. Conserve water Take shorter showers and don’t leave the faucet running while washing dishes and brushing…
