Rio+20: World’s biggest greenwash?

rio20-worlds-biggest-greenwash

The UN women’s group doesn’t like it. The UN children’s group doesn’t like it. Greenpeace hates it. So do Oxfam and a coalition of NGO’s known as the High Seas Alliance. I’m talking about the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, aka Rio+20, taking place 20 years after the seminal Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The agreement draft is not legally binding (it was never planned to be) and apparently has no clearly defined goals or timetables to tackle pressing issues like food security, water and energy. The leaders of many major countries are of course heralding its…

Is the biodiversity summit in Nagoya bound to fail?

is-the-biodiversity-summit-in-nagoya-bound-to-fail

You may not know this, but since the 1970’s, more than 40 percent of the earth’s species (plants and animals alike) disappeared from the face of our planet. So when the UN declared 2010 the international “Year of Biodiversity” it was with a clear message: to help save what’s left of our world’s ecosystems. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated: “Biological diversity underpins ecosystem functioning… its continued loss, therefore, has major implications for current and future human well-being.” Unfortunately there are still too many people that believe that biodiversity is “a kind of washing powder”, as this article from the BBC…

Last talks before Cancun climate summit held in China this week

last-talks-before-cancun-climate-summit-held-in-china-this-week

This week the final UN climate talks leading up to the summit in Cancun Mexico will be held in Tianjin, China, a large manufacturing city of over 12 million people. In the aftermath of a failed climate summit in Copenhagen last December, hope for any binding treaty between nations is slim. Kyoto part 2 seems like a politically impossible pipedream. Good news for the fossil fuel industry, bad news for most everyone else. If we believe the scientists, that is. From a Reuters article: Scientists say the world is on track for temperatures to rise well beyond 2 degrees Celsius,…

Alternative climate summit starts Monday in Bolivia

alternative-climate-summit-starts-monday-in-bolivia

The World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth begins on Monday, April 19th in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The summit, which is not under the auspices of the UN, is seen as the alternative to Copenhagen, with more of a focus on poor peoples, social justice and environmental activism. In addition to scientists, representatives of indigenous peoples, NGOs and government officials, the conference will welcome prominent authors, academic luminaries and Hollywood celebrities. The final group an obvious and understandable strategy to garner valuable publicity for issues that were buried during Copenhagen. Big names expected at the Bolivia…

at-the-world-future-energy-summit-in-abu-dhabi-the-green-economic-climate-looks-good

This month saw the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates host the World Future Energy Summit, an international forum attended by over 23,000 delegates from 130 countries around the globe. The Summit is billed as ‘the world’s platform for sustainable future energy solutions’ where policy makers, scientists, investors and industry representatives gather to discuss the future of energy, its demands, challenges, and how to meet these in a cleaner, more sustainable manner. Though the Summit itself lasted four days  (January 18th – 21st) the entire week surrounding it was dubbed Future Energy Week and concluded with a…

In the news: China, China, China

in-the-news-china-china-china

Though environmental news has slowed considerably since the summit in Copenhagen – a probable combination of post COP15 depression and the holiday season – a slew of opinion pieces and articles on Copenhagen fallout have appeared in those news sources which deign to continue to cover environmental issues. A large number of these pieces focus on China’s role in the summit, with several more covering other environmental issues around China. As the apparent future leader in renewable energy as well as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, China is the place we should all get used to reading, hearing…

Climate expert James Hansen on the Copenhagen summit, climate change science and a carbon tax

climate-expert-james-hansen-on-the-copenhagen-summit-climate-change-science-and-a-carbon-tax

James E. Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has been speaking out about climate change for over 20 years. He is highly critical of the policies of the United States Government concerning climate change and is an opponent of ‘cap and trade’. Hansen maintains that a carbon tax would be much more effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions than a cap and trade system. In the weeks running up to the UN climate summit in Copenhagen or COP15, James Hansen spoke out about his hopes that the summit would fail. Now that the climate talks have…

Are you already feeling nostalgic about all the buzz that lead up to COP15? Remember the feeling of anticipation before the historic summit in Copenhagen? It was palpable – we were going to solve all of our climate’s ills. Representatives from all over the globe were going to gather and agree on a binding deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions while giving the developing world a fair shake. The leaders of nations around the globe would unite against a common foe: climate change. Take that, CO2! We want clean energy, the preservation of lush rainforests and polar bears that aren’t…

Here are two segments from CNN relating to the issue of climate change and the conference in Copenhagen. The first is a brief video news report which gives a glimpse into the atmosphere inside the Bella Centre at the UN climate summit. Crowded with government and industry representatives, media, NGOs and activists, there are plenty of theatrics and even more suits and ties among the crowd of 15,000. The physical differences between the official areas of the United States and European Union when compared with those of the developing world are representative of the prevailing cleavages and contrasts we’ve been…

Strange scenes at COP15: curious news stories from the Copenhagen summit

strange-scenes-at-cop15-curious-news-stories-from-the-copenhagen-summit

So far the UN climate summit in Copenhagen has had its fair share of drama and quirkiness, from a British viscount calling climate activists ‘Hitler Youth’ to a polar bear challenging President Obama keep his promise to act on climate change. Here is a sampling of some of the more odd and less-covered bits of news surrounding COP15. Alternate climate meetings are taking place in Copenhagen, including a skeptic’s conference of ‘climate contrarians’ who are against any measures which would regulate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other end of the political spectrum, is the Klimaforum09, aka ‘the people’s climate summit’,…

Right now in Copenhagen there are two climate summits taking place: the one run by the UN and packed with political luminaries and prominent NGOs; and the other, ‘to represent ordinary concerned citizens from all around the world’. The second, lesser known of the two is called Klimaforum09 – the ‘Peoples Climate Summit’. It is a summit based on civil society – an alternative to the larger COP15 conference, which is grabbing most of the headlines. Author and activist Naomi Klein spoke at the opening ceremony for Klimatforum09 in Copenhagen, likening what is happening at COP15 to her concept of…

Here is a brief rundown about how British newspapers are covering the COP15 conference in Copenhagen. It is based on the papers’ websites, as I don’t dare exit my house to buy copies of them all due to an intense fear of increasing my carbon footprint. Richard Black, environment correspondent for the BBC News website has a ‘COP15 Copenhagen climate summit’ blog which you can read here. The London Times Copenhagen Diary is a collection of interesting, lesser known facts and trivia connected to the happenings surrounding the COP15 conference. The Guardian‘s Mathew Weaver has a ‘liveblog’ that details the…
