Heavy rains continue to fall in southern China, raising the death toll to 377 and it’s not likely to stop there. At least 142 people are still missing and more rain is still expected. Thus far, the flooding has caused nearly $11 billion in damages, forced the evacuation of 4.4 million people, and collapsed 368,000 homes. Although floods happen yearly in China, this year’s have been particularly heavy, spanning across 10 provinces and regions in the southeast, and it all comes right after a terrible drought season. Southeast France is battling the worst flooding in 180 years as a result of Tuesday’s heavy rains. Continuing thunderstorms and blackouts have plagued the area and made rescue efforts difficult, but water levels have now begun to subside and today’s improved weather is a blessing for cleanup crews. From a report in the Irish Times: While rescue operations had wound down yesterday, the authorities did not exclude the possibility of further bodies being found as the muddy water receded. When US President Barack Obama opened up large areas of America’s Atlantic coastline to new oil drilling two weeks ago, some astute observers suggested that it might not be much more than a political maneuver. There is a distinct lack of knowledge concerning how much oil is out there; estimates put the amount of the Atlantic coast at 2 billion barrels (or 100 days of consumption) to 10 billion.
