5 Advantages of Solar Power

5-advantages-of-solar-power

Everyone these days is talking about renewable sources of energy and protecting the environment. If you are considering solar power as a means of helping to lower energy usage, there are a few things that you should consider. Solar power offers major advantages and understanding these advantages will help you to know just how much of an impact your contribution will make. The first advantage of solar power is that it costs nothing. Solar power is completely free. As long as the sun hangs around, there will always be solar power. Of course, putting up solar panels will come at…

California: Solar farms pit govt against native tribes

california-solar-farms-pit-govt-against-native-tribes

A fast track approach by the US government towards certain renewable energy projects has drawn lawsuits and protests from some Native American groups and environmentalists in California. US President Barack Obama has set a goal of sourcing 80% of the country’s electricity from clean projects, but some of the projects are on lands considered sacred to Native American tribes. Environmental groups are also concerned that the projects could hard sensitive desert ecology. Government officials claim to have consulted tribal organizations and have determined that the works, such as a massive solar energy farm in Blythe, California, will not harm historical…

The environmental benefits of Solar Power

the-environmental-benefits-of-solar-power

As technology advances, it is becoming increasingly unnecessary to burn fossil fuels in order to produce usable energy. There are now many alternative and environmentally friendlier forms of energy available to us, and choosing to utilise them not only reduces our carbon footprint but also provides us with a sustainable energy source that will be around for years to come. The importance of solar power In a mere hour, the earth’s surface receives enough energy to supply the entire population for a whole year. We can therefore meet all of our energy requirements by harnessing this energy using solar photovoltaic…

How much do solar energy panels cost?

how-much-do-solar-energy-panels-cost

Despite the increasing availability environmentally-friendly solar energy panels most Americans are still resistant to utilizing this service in their own home because of perceptions of high costs. In a study released just last week researchers from Applied Materials found that 48% of Americans would not consider solar energy panels in their home at this time. However, there was a catch. More than 80% of these same people said that they would change their mind if it meant saving money. The good news is that technological advances and government incentives made available in the last few years has dramatically dropped the…

Obama Awards Two Solar Companies with $2 Billion; Thousands of New Jobs on the Horizon

obama-awards-two-solar-companies-with-2-billion-thousands-of-new-jobs-on-the-horizon

While oil spill news continues to look bleak, the solar industry is on the rise. Yesterday, US President Barack Obama announced the awarding of about $2 billion to two solar energy companies that agreed to build new solar power plants in the US. This means more renewable energy and thousands of new jobs will soon be available. The companies that earned the reward are Abengoa Solar and Abound Solar Manufacturing. Abengoa plans to build one of the largest solar plants in the world, in Arizona. The plant will be able to power up to 70,000 homes. As for Abound Solar…

Solar Panels too Expensive? Try Solar Hot Water Heaters Instead.

solar-panels-too-expensive-try-solar-hot-water-heaters-instead

Solar panels have officially become mainstream: You’ll see them on homes, offices, schools, and so forth. It certainly would be great if everyone could have them. Unfortunately, they are quite unaffordable for most, with costs being around $20,000 or more and an increase in buildings insurance premiums to cover the installation. Everyone can’t afford that kind of investment, even through credit cards and even if it does pay for itself over time—I know I certainly can’t.   The good news is, there is another way you can use solar power that is much cheaper and still as effective: Solar hot…

Brandeis to Install One Of The Largest Solar Power Arrays in Massachusetts

brandeis-to-install-largest-solar-power-array-in-massachusetts

EOS Ventures is partnering with Brandeis University in Massachusetts to build one of the largest solar power array in the state at the Gosman Center. The array is expected to generate about 277-kilowatts, enough to power about 10% of their needs. According to estimates, it should save about 11.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 25 years. This project is part of the universities’ initiative to be carbon-neutral by the year 2050. Read the full article here By Maria Belgado

The hitch between solar projects and water conservation

the-hitch-between-solar-projects-and-water-conservation

The continued quest for renewable energy sources through solar farms has posed another glitch because it consumes huge amounts of water for cooling purposes. A large solar farm uses a minimum of 500 million gallons of water annually in order to function efficiently. Most solar plants are fighting with state regulators to get the water they need amid disapproval among conservation enthusiasts. An alternative “dry cooling” technique which uses ninety percent less water compared to “wet cooling” is available, but it reduces the efficiency of the solar plant and it is also more expensive. Anywhere you look at it, both…

Bridging the gap between awareness and implementation of Solar Technology

bridging-the-gap-between-awareness-and-implementation-of-solar-technology

Solar energy is deemed to be an important source of power and most people think that the government should subsidize projects related to this endeavor. Development and use of solar power has continuously remained popular among the majority of US residents. However, Solar Power only accounts for approximately 1% among various energy sources being used country-wide. The considerable gap could be attributed to three major factors namely cost, lack of information and lack of individual resolve. The first two are already being tackled by combined efforts of the government and several institutions. A number of programs to cut the cost…

Retail Giant Brings the Future of Sustainable Shopping

Wal-Mart has been placed at both ends of the spectrum over the years; a business that has been the receiver of both praise and contempt, and still it keeps pushing the envelope and tearing into its rivals like nobody’s business. Their most recent pursuits have involved going green, or at least greener. Wal-Mart President, Lee Scott has stated that the company’s environmental goals include: “1. To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy. 2. To create zero waste. 3. To sell products that sustain our resources and environment.” And so far this year, they have been well on their way…

Reuters reports that Google is investing new mirror technology with a potential to reduce the cost of building solar thermal plants by no less than a quarter or more. According to the company’s green energy specialist Bill Weihl, Google is “looking at very unusual materials for the mirrors both for the reflective surface as well as the substrate that the mirror is mounted on”. Already back in 2007 Google announced its wish to contribute to the research related to the production of affordable renewable energy. To achieve that goal the company has been focusing on solar thermal technology, where the…

Solar Roadways Gains Ground

solar-roadways-gains-ground

The Solar Road Panels will soon become a reality in the United States. The Department of Transportation has recently given the company Solar Roadways $100,000 to create a prototype of the project. This technology uses LED lights embedded in the roads to do just about anything – communicate with cars and warn them about detours ahead, detect wildlife on the highways, heat up the roads to melt ice and prevent icing and even charge electric cars while they are on the road, making long-distance trips for such cars possible. It is estimated that about 5 billion 1 square foot panels…
