Study blames humans for Arctic sea ice loss

study-blames-humans-for-arctic-sea-ice-loss

A new study by scientists at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Reading attributes the dramatic reduction in Arctic summer sea ice since the 1970s to human activity. The study found that the 40% loss since the 70s is at least 70% man made, with the rest down to natural variability in the Atlantic. And that is only a conservative estimate, with as much as 95% of ice loss estimated to be caused by humans. The study’s leader, Jonny Day, is quoted in the Guardian on one of the accelerating causes of Arctic ice melt, which…

Amnesty International: Shell oil spill in Nigeria 60x worse

amnesty-international-shell-oil-spill-in-nigeria-60x-worse

Research commissioned by the human rights group Amnesty International found that an oil spill in the Niger Delta was at least 60 times worse than claims made by the oil giant Shell. Royal Dutch Shell is currently being sued over the spill in a London Court by a group of 11,000 Nigerians, including many fishermen of the Bodo region, who claim their livelihoods were destroyed. Though 60 times Shell’s figure, the Amnesty International estimate is still half of what Martyn Day, lawyer for the Bodo communities puts the damage at. From Reuters: The Amnesty accusation is based on footage of…

Shell experimenting with dogs to detect Arctic oil

shell-experimenting-with-dogs-to-detect-arctic-oil

In preparation for the eventuality of oil spills resulting from drilling in the icy Arctic region, Shell Oil might be enlisting the help of sniffer dogs as an inexpensive contingency plan. Shell plans to start drilling off the northwest coast of Alaska as early as June. Since there are as of yet no methods for detecting oil spills that are covered by ice and snow, the use of dachshunds and border collies could be the best the minds of Shell and other companies have been able to come up with. Personally, I have no idea if this is an effective…

North Sea oil spill not over

north-sea-oil-spill-not-over

The oil leak in the North Sea, which was discovered by Shell last Monday – but not announced until Friday – has been mostly staunched, according to the UK government. Yet another, albeit much smaller, leak has been found stemming from the same offshore platform and it is spilling some 2 barrels of crude oil per day. The second leak is proving difficult to stop, according to Shell, due to its ‘awkward’ positioning. Last Monday’s oil spill is already being called the worst to occur in UK waters in the last 10 years. From an article in the Independent: An…

Shell reports oil leak at North Sea

shell-reports-oil-leak-at-north-sea

Earlier today Shell reported an oil spill at its Gannet Alpha platform about 180 km from Aberdeen close to the U.K. shore at the North Sea. Although the leak has been partially contained, some leakage of unknown volume is still going on. The amount of oil that already leaked into the North Sea is also still unclear. The leak was discovered by an unmanned submarine after an oil sheen had been observed in the area. Following this find, Shell immediately removed the pressure of the pipeline, and started taking further steps to isolate the leak. The local Maritime and Coastguard…

Niger Delta spills – Shell accepts ‘some’ responsibility

Lest we forget, Nigeria’s Ogoniland region is still poisoned and ecologically damaged by 50 years of unsafe, irresponsible oil drilling practices. A new UN study (paid for by the Shell and the Nigerian government) puts the damage to the area, located on the Niger Delta, at levels even worse than previously thought. Clean up could cost $1bn and take 30 years to complete. Meanwhile the local fishing community has seen their livelihood suffer and health issues linked to environmental toxicity plague residents. Drinking water is contaminated, with some areas experiencing benzene levels at 900 times acceptable levels. From BBC News:…

Ireland: Quiet village fights govt and corporate deal for pipeline and refinery

ireland-quiet-village-fights-govt-and-corporate-deal-for-pipeline-and-refinery

Fossil fuel giant Shell struck up a deal with Ireland’s outgoing Fianna Fail party to construct an onshore refinery and massive gas pipeline in a remote corner of the country. It was one of Fianna Fail’s final acts in power. Locals, many who work in fishing and farming, have campaigned and protested vigorously against the project for some 10 years. They succeeded in getting Shell to reduce pressure levels in the pipe and route it away from the village of Rossport, but are still dissatisfied because of the undemocratic nature of the project and the fact that the plans will…

Petro dollars or renewable energy: Make it while we can?

petro-dollars-or-renewable-energy-make-it-while-we-can

A new study by the WWF says it’s possible to cut global carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050 by investing heavily in green tech. Kind of like China is doing, but without all the investment in fossil fuels that they are also doing. The report claims that we could source 95% of our energy from renewables. While we are currently using and demanding more and more energy intensive goods and services, energy saving measures are in fact reducing the actual energy we use. From an article in the Ecologist Before pouring billions into creating a new generation of…

Don’t forget Nigeria’s devastating oil spills

don%e2%80%99t-forget-nigeria%e2%80%99s-devastating-oil-spills

The massive leak in the Gulf of Mexico may have been stopped, but oil still continues to spread and flow. Scientists, local communities and businesses wait for the true toll of damage to be revealed as the rest of the world turns its attentions elsewhere. Environmentalists desperately try to prevent the fossil fuel industry from destroying another pristine environment in the icy Arctic, but the thirst for oil is strong and the geopolitics surrounding it complex. Yet there is another place where a devastating spill is continually taking place, poisoning lush ecosystems while destroying livelihoods and lives. In Nigeria’s Niger…

Nigeria faces Gulf-sized oil spills every year

nigeria-faces-gulf-sized-oil-spills-every-year

Large spills in Nigeria are routine, and oil companies go largely unpunished for destroying the local environment as well as poisoning the human population. Some of the damage is due to actions by rebel groups and criminals, who attack pipelines, but rusty old pipes continually leak oil, while gas flares both waste a valuable natural resource as well as release toxic pollution and greenhouse gasses. In fact, more oil is spilled from the delta’s network of terminals, pipes, pumping stations and oil platforms every year than has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico, the site of a major ecological catastrophe…

Human rights abuses, pollution, environmental destruction and wasteful gas flaring: the oil industry in Nigeria

human-rights-abuses-pollution-environmental-destruction-and-wasteful-gas-flaring-the-oil-industry-in-nigeria

The West African nation of Nigeria is home to some of the richest and most diverse ecological systems in the world. The Niger River Delta in particular, contains four separate ecosystems: coastal barrier islands, mangrove swamp forests, freshwater swamps, and lowland rain forests. Nigeria also has a major petroleum industry, ranking 12th in the world for production, 10th for known reserves and 8th in oil export. Unfortunately the environmental treasure trove that is the Niger Delta is also the country’s main oil producing region. Amnesty International has spearheaded a campaign against Shell Oil in Nigeria. According to a BBC News…
