According to a piece in the New York Times, great white sharks are responsible for most overall shark attacks world wide as well as most fatal and unprovoked attacks. There have been 5 fatal shark attacks off the coast of Western Australia in the past 10 months, sparking speculation that the population of great whites is increasing and discussion about removing the shark’s protected status. Great whites have been protected in Australia since 1999. Despite the dangers that some varieties of sharks sometimes pose, experts recommend managing human behavior rather than reducing shark populations. A shark attack registry maintained by the University…

Consuming shark fin soup is a bad idea, not only because of the decreasing number of sharks, but it can also lead to a brain damage. “A new study has found high concentrations of BMAA in shark fins — a neurotoxin linked to neurodegenerative diseases in humans including Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig disease (ALS)”, informs sunnewsnetwork.ca. Patients with these diseases, tested before they died, had very high levels of BMAA – up to 256 nanograms per milligram – in their brains. Shark fins contain between 144 and 1836 ng/mg of this neurotoxin. The threat comes, not only from eating the…

A couple of bizarre environmental/eco-related-ish stories caught my attention this past weekend as I was skimming the ‘intertubes’. One was a video of a mysterious, mystical California surfer dude removing a fishhook from the mouth of a small (but not that small) Great White Shark. A small crowd gathered as the injured Great White flopped around in the shallows of Venice Beach, California when suddenly a local surfer/friend of the animals arrived on the scene and took control; removing the hook, sending the shark on its way and then promptly vanishing into the Venice mists. Check out the video here…
