Ever since we heard about the destruction of the Ady Gil and Sea Shepherd’s attempts to take legal action against Japan, they seemed to have slipped out of the news. Well, that isn’t entirely so. Last Friday (January 15, 2010), they decided to take legal action one step further. The Ady Gil is basically from New Zealand and apparently, under the New Zealand Crimes Act of 1961, a citizen holds the power to serve an arrest warrant for any suspected crime that carries a penalty of more than 8 years imprisonment. Captain Pete Bethune decided to take the law into…

Piracy on the high seas is something you usually hear about happening with Somalians these days, or it’s turned into an epic Disney trilogy. Now it’s taken on another meaning through Whale Wars. The Sea Shepherd crew is now looking into placing criminal charges against the Japanese whalers for the destruction of their ship, the Ady Gil. The damage to the Ady Gil caused the ship to completely sink within days of the incident. Potential charges that may be filed against Japan include attempted murder. Piracy charges have already been filed against the Japanese ship under Dutch law. Captain Paul…

It has already been a week since the bow of the Ady Gil was destroyed and tension between the Sea Shepherd crew and Japanese whalers is still high; some would even say they’ve escalated since the incident. The Sea Shepherd crew sent their helicopter out on Thursday to search for one of the main Japanese whaling ships in an attempt to make the whalers give up their hunting. Unfortunately, the attempt did not work. While actions continue to escalate between the conservationists and whalers, nations are still trying to figure what exactly to do about the attack on the Ady…

The Ady Gil—a New Zealand based ship that joined Sea Shepherd last year—was rammed by Japan’s Shonan Maru vessel, near Commonwealth Bay. The clash tore 10 feet (3 meters) of the Ady Gil’s bow off their ship, causing them to take on water. Six of their crew members were safely transferred to another ship in the Sea Shepherd crew; one of which appeared to suffer two cracked ribs, though the others were fine. The Ady Gil’s captain remained on the…

The newest season of Whale Wars is underway and it already looks to be quite the volatile one. The Sea Shepherd crew has embarked on their 6th Whale Defense Campaign, this time through southern arctic waters. The campaign—appropriately named “Operation Waltzing Matilda”—launched from Australia on December 7th. The ship, named Steve Irwin after the late “Crocodile Hunter”, even had a few surprise visitors come to see it disembark: Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin. Picking up a trail from one of the Japanese ships, the Sea Shepherd crew began their hunt. Ady Gil (formerly known as Earthrace)—their New Zealand-based allies—would be…

Avid watchers and followers of the hit Animal Planet TV show Whale Wars will be ecstatic to hear that the Sea Shepherd crew finally has another ally to help them in their war against commercial whaling on the high seas. This past week, it was announced that New Zealand’s Earthrace crew will be joining the fight, making their combined effort quite the ominous force to be reckoned with. The Earthrace ship (recently renamed the Ady Gil) is said to look like something out of the future or perhaps a form of alien watercraft. It is a tri-hull wave piercer, built…
