The couple views the wreckage And dreams of home sweet home, They’d almost paid the mortgage, Then the system dropped its bomb. –Crass “Systematic Death” Those suffering from the effects of the subprime mortgage crisis include working families who for various reasons are unable – or simply not allowed by their banks – to make payments on their homes. The very financial institutions, which caused and even orchestrated the crisis, were later bailed out by taxpayers so that, apparently, they could get back to their old tricks: profiting off the disadvantages of those they conned and fleeced with unscrupulous…

In San Francisco, California and Berlin, Germany, urban farms and gardens are popping up like weeds. In the San Francisco Bay area, which includes cities such as Oakland and Berkley, farming regulations are being modernized to include legal provisions for urban agriculture. Rooftops, derelict plots and median strips are being transformed into gardens by progressive new local government directives. Berkeley soon will take up a measure to allow residents to sell raw agricultural products from home without a costly permit. And Oakland has pledged to one-up its neighbors by tackling the raising of backyard animals as a personal food…

Imagine a vessel made from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic soda bottles and you will have one of the most interesting creations (and story) of our time. The Plastiki started as an idea of David de Rothschild and thanks to further inspiration by the famous Kon-Tiki voyage (led by Thor Heyerdahl), the idea slowly became a reality. Since it would take a rather long time to explain the story and process of it all, you can read about it here (pdf file) and I’ll move on to the specs of it. To start with, you already know that it consists (mostly)…

Amber Bieg is on a mission: to account for every single tree in San Francisco. It all started 5 years ago when Bieg was planting trees in the North Beach area of San Francisco. She realized that “it was really inefficient for one individual, or even a group, to go out with GPS units and survey trees”. So, she started on a plan to get the whole community involved. Bieg partnered up with ecologist, Kelaine Vargas, and the Urban Forest Map project was born. The idea of Urban Forest Map combines citizen science and local data projects, and fortunately for…

Having a Christmas tree has become a tradition for most of us and it is one of the most valued symbols during Christmas season. The downside is the countless dead trees that line our streets after the holidays. Not only is it unsightly, it is also wasteful. This year, San Francisco-based Friends of the Urban Forest and SF Environment have teamed up to offer live varieties of potted plants to be used as Christmas Trees. For just $95, you can have your pick of 6’ to 8’ tall trees. These trees have been specifically selected to thrive in San Francisco’s…

If you’ve been actively following the news here on GreenFudge, you may remember an article posted a couple weeks ago on composting becoming mandatory in San Francisco. Well, it would seem that the people of the East Bay Municipal Utility District have taken it upon themselves to push the composting law to the next level and turn the food waste into renewable energy. Already responsible for providing 650,000 eastern Bay Area homes with water and wastewater treatment; the utility now collects food scraps from over 2300 grocery stores and restaurants for their project. The process it takes to get from…

Last Friday, we posted a breaking news article on an oil spill that occurred in the San Francisco Bay. At the time, we did not have many details of the spill available to us, but now we have up-to-date information on what’s been going on. The spill occurred Friday morning, during a fuel transfer between the Dubai Star and a barge. The spill—which was between 400 and 800 gallons—can be contributed to a mechanical failure of the Star’s transfer system. The ship in question is currently docked at San Francisco’s Pier 80; 2 miles south from where the spill occurred….

Not 30 minutes ago, the US Coast Guard reported an oil tanker leaking fuel into the San Francisco Bay. The slick that was caused is at least a mile long so far, and still expanding. Oil was leaked from the Panama-flagged Dubai Star during a fuel transfer this morning, and they are unsure how much exactly was spilled. Coast Guard water and aircraft are currently on the scene, about 2 ½ miles southeast of the Bay Bridge. Updates will be posted as things are found out. By Heidi Marshall

If you intend to travel to San Francisco, be sure to mind your eco-manners. Failure to comply with new recycling and composting laws can get you slapped with a $500 fine. That’s right– it is now officially illegal to throw food waste into the trash. Reported earlier this year, the people of San Francisco were not entirely happy of this new mandatory change; however, they have all adapted extremely well, including businesses. Since the initial announcement, composting activity has increased from 400 to 500 tons per day; and the law did not even go into effect until today! That’s quite…
