There have been many victims of this month’s earthquake and resultant tsunami disaster in northern Japan. The loss of human life, livelihood and property is immense and the suffering continues. Less attention has been given to the countless animals – wild, domestic and livestock – who have also suffered and are still in dire need of help. The title of this post has two meanings because there are two categories of help. There are still many animals stranded in or facing terrible and dangerous conditions in the areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. There are also many who have…

A pod of around 80 pilot whales stranded itself on a New Zealand beach earlier this week. The whales were spotted Wednesday morning on a beach at Spirits Bay on New Zealand’s North Island. Dozens died before a rescue effort successfully moved 24 of the whales to another beach some 50km south for release. An additional three died during the relocation effort according to an AAP report. Now at Rarawa Beach, the surviving whales will be released tonight and herded in the right direction by boats. From a Press Association report: On Thursday, volunteers moved the 24 surviving members of…

Two freshwater dolphins were recently rescued from a Bolivian river after being trapped there for months due to low water levels. The smallish dolphins weigh between 30 and 40 kilos (66-88 pounds) each and were among a group of nine river dolphins which have been stranded in a Rio Grande tributary for over a month. The rescue operation is ongoing. From an Associated Press report: The two dolphins were caught in nets and brought to shore. They were put in padded, water-filled aluminum containers and driven on all-terrain vehicles about two miles downstream, where they were put in a pen…

According to a report in the Independent, at least 11 of the 58 whales that beached themselves on Karikari Beach in Northern New Zealand on Thursday night have been successfully refloated. The reports differ about the number of saved pilot whales – the Associated Press reports that only 9 survived and 4 were euthanized: The survivors had headed out to sea Saturday afternoon and were monitored to ensure they did not return to the beach, Conservation Department spokeswoman Carolyn Smith said. But within an hour four of them became stranded again, Smith said. Furthermore, the estimated total number of deaths…

They say things always happen in three’s. So far, we’ve had a flood tear through Arkansas and also one through Oklahoma. I can only imagine where the next one will be, but here are some updates on the first two: The Arkansas death toll rose to 20 flood victims as rescuers found the body of a young girl. Search teams were not sure if the girl was the same as one reported missing by her family, so they must wait until her identity is confirmed by DNA or dental records before they make any further announcements. In addition to the…

The search continues in Arkansas after a flood swept through a campground in the state and killed at least 18 people. So far, 15 of the 18 victims have been publicly identified. The death toll includes at least 6 children—3 of which were from Louisiana—plus 3 others from Louisiana and 6 from Texas. Only 1 of the identified was actually from Arkansas. Rescue workers have been scouring the campground for signs of life or death, though with all the debris it could take days to find anyone, as many of them could be trapped under fallen trees and rocks. Some…

Wild animals are illegally captured and sold all too often anymore. Sometimes, they are kept alive and sold for pets, entertainment purposes, or who knows what other schemes. Other times, they are killed and sold for food, clothing, decorations, or medicinal purposes. And yet there are some rare occasions when the animals are discovered and saved before it’s too late; such an occasion happened earlier this week. Indonesian police found 71 endangered Green Sea Turtles after conducting a warehouse raid in Bali. All of the animals were alive at the time, but their flippers were tied with rope, suggesting they…

I think the gulf coast oil spill situation has gotten way out of hand, don’t you? The whole thing started on April 20th, when the Deepwater Horizon rig caught fire and eventually exploded. Right then should have been a clue that something bad (such as an oil spill) would follow. However, it wasn’t until 2 days later that anyone noticed oil was actually leaking from the rig or well—and up to 340,000 gallons of crude oil per day! It is now May 12th—22 days since the explosion happened and 20 days since the leak was discovered, and still things do…

A rare event happened in India yesterday. A tornado—with winds in excess of 100 mph (160 kph)—tore through the northeastern part of the country, injuring hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. At least 119 people were killed during the storm. Rescue workers have been busy distributing rice, dried fruit, and water to the cyclone victims. Tarpaulins were also passed out to the people who lost their homes for building temporary shelters. Hundreds of uprooted trees and electricity poles have also been cleared from roads and other areas. Nearly 50,000 mud huts were destroyed in West Bengal, along with thousands more in…

After a long week of worry, hope, fear, and stressful conditions, the search for the 4 missing miners finally came to an end. None of them survived. Governor Joe Manchin stated: “We did not receive the miracle that we prayed for.” … “The rescue workers told us they’re sure no one suffered.” … “So, this journey has ended and now the healing will start.” All 4 bodies were shattered by an explosion that happened in West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine earlier this week, raising the death toll to 29 and making it the worst US coal mine disaster since…

There is finally a glimmer of hope in finding the 4 missing miners. West Virginia Governor, Joe Manchin, announced that rescue crews were finally able to enter the Upper Big Branch mine at 4:55 am this morning. The rescue crew consisted of 4 teams of 8 members each and they made their way into the mine by car, foot, and rail. The search had to be postponed for at least 2 days, so holes could be drilled into the mine to ventilate several poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane. The methane is what most blamed for the explosion,…

On March 28, 153 coal miners were trapped in the Wangjialing mine in Shanxi Province, northern China when the mine was suddenly flooded with water. More than one week later an amazing rescue is taking place. According to a CNN report, so far rescue workers have managed to save 115 miners. Two hundred people, as part of 50 rescue groups, were working around-the-clock to drain water, monitor gas and pull out miners, said Wang Jun, governor of Shanxi province where the mine is situated. On average, seven miners die every day in China, where safety levels are improving, yet still…

The aftermath of Chile’s earthquake has been anything but positive. Aftershocks continue to happen, looters are running rampant, and the death toll has climbed to over 700 thus far. At least 500,000 houses were destroyed or damaged. There is also a “growing number of people” listed as missing, according to President Michele Bachelet. She also stated that “we are facing a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort”. The looters have been worst of all. Every type of store or market you can think of has been looted. Items ranging from food and water to…
