And you just thought you lived over a tube line. The threat of earthquakes in London is far greater than previously estimated, according to the British Geological Survey. Though not exactly an earthquake hotspot, the southeast of England should be more prepared for seismic activity that could cause damage to buildings. Back in 1931 a 6.1 magnitude quake occurred of the coast of Yorkshire, but was powerful enough to knock the head off of a wax figure in Madame Tussauds in London. In 1580 two people died and many buildings were damaged due to tremors originating on the Dover Strait….

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand on Saturday. The quake was centered near Christchurch, one of the largest cities on the island nation. At least 500 buildings were damaged or destroyed, roads were cracked, and surprisingly only 2 serious injuries were reported. Oh, and there’s one other thing. It’s possible the earthquake created a new fault line. Geology professor of Canterbury University, Mark Quiqley, explained: “One side of the earth has lurched to the right … up to 11 feet (3.5 m) and in some places been thrust up.” … “The long, linear fracture on the Earth’s surface does…

Dogs, rodents, fish and snakes have been observed reacting to earthquakes, sometimes several days before they occur. Now we can add toads to the list of animals that can ‘predict’ seismic activity. A British study on toads in Italy shows strong evidence that the amphibians can detect earthquakes days before they happen. According to a report from BBC News, toads that were being studied in L’Aquila, Italy last year produced no spawn during an earthquake period, which begins at the main shock and continues to the last aftershock. What’s even more remarkable is that the toads fled the earthquake area…

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale struck in Taiwan today causing structural damage, rail disruptions, fire and around 64 injuries. Fortunately, there have been no reports of deaths from the quake so far. In an article on the earthquake, The Christian Science Monitor spoke to Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismology Center of Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, who said the recent quakes in Chile and Haiti are unrelated to this latest seismic event in Taiwan: Kuo says the Taiwan, Chile, and Haiti quakes involved different tectonic plates. Globally, he says, there’s an average of one…

Last Saturday’s deadly earthquake in Chile may have slightly shortened the day and affected the position of the Earth’s axis, according to NASA scientists. The quake measured 8.8. on the Richter scale and is estimated to have shifted the Earth’s axis by 2.7 milliarcseconds (8 cm or 3 in) and shortened the length of the day by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second) according to an article from Bloomberg. So much land was moved during the earthquake that it may have significantly changed the Earth’s distribution of mass enough to affect such changes. Previous earthquakes have had a similar effect,…
