This is the last forest in Europe, where you can view and enjoy how it looked eight thousand years ago. Soon, however, this may change due to ongoing, and destructive human activities. Greenpeace activists are calling for reducing deforestation, which leads to a progressive degradation of this unique, and beautiful area of the Białowieża Forest. Members of Greenpeace Poland, pointed out that since the time of the Jagiellonian dynasty (1386), for hundreds of years, until World War I, Bialowieza Forest was strictly protected. For the past several years, the forest has been heavily exploited. Harvesting consisted of natural tree stands,…

India’s Minister of State for Environmental and Forest, Jairam Ramesh, recently announced plans to launch 2 satellites that will be specifically used to monitor environmental changes in the country. The first satellite, which will be launched in 2012, will monitor daily carbon emissions; while the second satellite will monitor India’s forest cover—also on a daily basis. Both satellites will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organization. According to Ramesh: “Currently, forest cover in the country can be known only after two years and the reduction of this period will help the government in taking steps immediately.” In addition to…

Would you want to buy oil from the worst oil spill in US history? If you said no, I don’t blame you—I wouldn’t want to, either. However, would you buy the same oil if part of the proceeds went to fund the efforts to protect and restore all damaged wildlife habitat along the Gulf Coast? It really makes you think twice, doesn’t it? Right now, we may absolutely hate BP. We may want to boycott them and we are most likely absolutely sick of hearing about them in the news (and reporting about them, for that matter—I know I sure…

I have been reading The Lord of the Rings lately. One of my favorite characters from these books is Treebeard (or Fangorn—and the rest of the Ents). Not only are the Ents tree-like in appearance, but Tolkien did an awesome job at showing us how important they are to the world, even without us realizing it. They provide us with shelter and protection, food and nourishment, and even wisdom and council. They will listen to us talk when no one else will and they are quite steadfast and strong, even through the direst of storms. We owe the trees and…

Last week, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) announced plans to add 75,000 more acres to their Wetlands Reserve Program. The acres are located throughout 22 states (mostly in the south and Midwest) and Puerto Rico. Wetlands are an important habitat to many species and also rather vital to our own well-being. They filter contaminants from the water, prevent flooding and soil erosion, and play other key roles that benefit the environment. On top of the added protection, the USDA will also provide approximately $175 million in funding to the 22 states and Puerto Rico, too. Agriculture Secretary, Tom…

The Mexican Gray Wolf may finally be getting the much needed protection it deserves. Earlier this year, WildEarth Guardians filed a lawsuit against the US Fish and Wildlife service in an attempt to force the agency to issue a finding. This past week, a federal judge in Arizona approved a settlement that requires the agency to issue a finding by the end of July. This finding is based on a petition that seeks to obtain an endangered species listing for the Mexican Gray Wolf that is distinct from the other Gray Wolves of the US. The petition in question was…
