86 Cabbage Butterflies, 5 Spring Azures, 4 Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, 1 Monarch, and at least 8 other unidentifiable species. Those are our totals for our part in the annual North American Butterfly Association Butterfly Counts program (thus far). Every year, butterfly counts are taken throughout Canada, the US, and Mexico (and most likely other countries around the world—but this isn’t about them). These counts allow regular people to get involved with the scientific process and learn more about the environment around them. To take part in the butterfly count, all you really need is a pair of binoculars and a…

Due to concerns over the rapid decline in the population of Britain’s insect pollinators in recent years, a research program was launched on Tuesday, allotting £10m (€12m) to the discovery of why bees and other insects are dying off. If all insect pollinators in the UK became extinct, it would cost the national economy £440m (€534m) per year. And although honeybees get most of the attention, they are just one of Britain’s many crucial pollinator insect species. From an article in the Guardian: According to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, three of the 25 British species of bumblebees are…

You may have a recycling station at your place of work, or there might be one at your kids’ school. You do it, your neighbors do it, even celebrities and government officials do it. We may do it for the planet or the greater, greener good; or we may do it simply because it’s legally required in our town, state or country. However, there are still those who don’t do it—or perhaps they do, but they…

Did you know that you can help clean up the oil spill off the Gulf Coast right from the comfort of your own home? Matter of Trust seeks those who have hair, fur, wool and nylons to spare. If you are thinking of getting a haircut (or giving your animal friend a nice grooming), be sure to save those clippings! Even if you work at a hair salon or a dog grooming parlor, that’s even better. Hair, fur, wool and nylons can be used to make booms and mats. These booms and mats are used to contain and soak up…

The tigers of the world face a dire situation. Many of them are endangered—or critically endangered—species and on the brink of extinction. Habitat loss and poaching are 2 of the biggest factors that continue to push their numbers lower. Fortunately, WWF is doing everything they can to help, but now they need your help, too. Coinciding with the Chinese Year of the Tiger, WWF has launched a new program to help save the Tigers. TX2 calls on the aid of you—people around the globe—to help the tiger. On their website, you will find information and images of tigers, news updates…
