Now they are being used in a controversial new anti flying campaign by the environmental activist group Plane Stupid. If it’s attention they want, it seems to be working. According to Plane Stupid, ‘It’s really not about polar bears anymore’, but the depiction of giant CGI bears plummeting to a grizzly end on the streets of New York City certainly makes an impression: CGI has certainly come a long way. It also makes me feel bit guilty…

The 12 day CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) meetings begin on Saturday in the city of Doha, capital of the Arab emirate of Qatar. The talks will attempt to hammer out transnational policies concerning the management and protection of animal and plant species that are threatened with endangerment or extinction due to international commerce. From the CITES website: Annually, international wildlife trade is estimated to be worth billions of dollars and to include hundreds of millions of plant and animal specimens. Maybe I’m a jaded snob, but the guy in the polar bear suit just isn’t funny to me. I’m actually a bit tired of polar bears and pandas. They’re cute and all, but no one really cares about them that much. The emblem of environmentalism should be something that the most people with the most power hold dear. If only somehow climate change meant no more Super Bowls or an end to X-Factor…

So far the UN climate summit in Copenhagen has had its fair share of drama and quirkiness, from a British viscount calling climate activists ‘Hitler Youth’ to a polar bear challenging President Obama keep his promise to act on climate change. Here is a sampling of some of the more odd and less-covered bits of news surrounding COP15. Alternate climate meetings are taking place in Copenhagen, including a skeptic’s conference of ‘climate contrarians’ who are against any measures which would regulate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other end of the political spectrum, is the Klimaforum09, aka ‘the people’s climate summit’,…

Climate Change, Wildlife & Flora, Oct 20th, 2009,
Summer hits, and people are raring to go on vacation. Some may head off to the great outdoors; most will make a beeline for the beach. If things end up as predicted, the Arctic may become the latest summer hotspot, transforming into a nice, cold sea during those long, hot months. However, if you’re planning on finding an Arctic-front hotel, good luck because there may not be any solid ground to even stand on. In all seriousness, Global Warming is having an extremely negative impact on the Arctic more than ever before. We all know of the polar bears’ story…
