White-tailed Eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. It weighs up to 6 kilograms, with a 2.5 metre wingspan. “During the period 1800-1970, White-tailed Eagles in most of Europe, underwent dramatic declines, and became extinct in many regions of Western, central, and Southern Europe. While Norway, Germany, Poland, and Iceland harboured the largest surviving populations, pockets of reproducing pairs remained in several other countries” – according to Wikipedia. The White-Tailed Eagle (Polish: Bielik, plural Bieliki) is considered Poland’s national symbol and it is believed that it’s this noble bird that appears on the Coat of…

In the wilderness of the strict nature reserve, in the central part of Białowieża Forest, a stone circle was discovered a few years ago. The trees there, especially oaks, growing in the vicinity of the circle, differ significantly in appearance from other trees in the area. Most of the trees near the circle grow in the form of several shoots. They are growing just above the ground with two, three, or even more trunks. While such types of trees elsewhere in the Białowieża Forest would be rather unique, it seems to be the rule here. What is interesting is that…

Poland, Belarus and the Ukraine will form the cross-border biosphere reserve of ‘Polesie Zachodnie’ (Western Polesie) it has been announced. Last month in Kiev, an agreement was signed which aims to establish the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of Western Polesie by combining three biosphere reserves that lie near the Polish, Belarusian and Ukrainian borders. Western Polesie is a land of unique natural beauty and landscape, situated on both sides of the upper basin of the Bug and Pripyat. It is a region overlapping biogeographic zones: boreal, continental and Atlantic, and distinguished in the whole European continent by its significant biodiversity and specific…

Last fall I had the opportunity to visit Europe’s last remaining primeval forest, the Białowieża forest in northeastern Poland. This is one of the few remaining places on the continent where nature can be observed as it once was, before the drastic reshaping of human activity. It is home to animals such as elk, wild boars, wolves, wizent (European bison), lynx, eagles and wild horses. But there is a sharp cleavage between business interests and those who wish to preserve the forest by expanding the national park to encompass the entire Polish portion of Białowieża (the rest lies in bordering…

Heavy rains have caused rivers to burst their banks in Germany, Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. A total of 14 have died so far from the flooding and more are missing. According to Australian broadsheet The Age the Neisse River, which forms part of the border between Germany and Poland before flowing into the Czech Republic, has swelled to a height of 7.07 meters, over three times its normal level ‘and the highest since records began in 1912’. More rivers are expected to soon burst their banks, such as the Spree in Germany. For more on the story see…

Due in part to the popularity of the environmental documentary film Gasland, the practice of natural gas extraction using hydraulic fracturing, alternately known as ‘fracking’ or ‘fracing’, has been the subject of much debate. The process of hydraulic fracturing involves drilling into shale reservoirs and creating fractures by pumping in water. The principle environmental concerns regarding fracking are the contamination of wells and aquifers with chemicals used in the drilling process, air quality issues and the mismanagement of solid waste. The spread of fracking for shale gas in the United States has already partially revolutionized the natural gas industry there…

European beavers, which have been wiped out in parts of Europe, are now apparently taking revenge on humanity for once being hunted to near extinction. Since European nations – namely Germany, Romania and the Netherlands – have reintroduced beavers into the wild and dedicated time and money to help their recovery, the furry aquatic rodents have been gnawing on the hand that feeds. Typical, thankless behavior. From an article in the London Times: The rodents, Castor fiber, have been munching through dykes and aggravating the floods currently sweeping along the River Oder in Central Europe. They are also holding up…

Flooding has continued in central and Eastern Europe this weekend, with some 5,000 people evacuating their homes in Poland and western Russia, according to a video report from NBC’s Today Show. Conditions are particularly bad in several Siberian villages due to ice damming up a river. According to a report from Deutsche Welle, the death toll in Poland reached 12 this Saturday. Barriers in Warsaw were holding up Friday evening, although the capital saw water levels reaching 7.74 meters (25.4 feet) on Saturday – just short of the eight-meter mark when authorities must prepare emergency services. –Deutsche Welle German authorities…

Parts of Europe have been ravaged by flooding lately and unfortunately, it looks like the angry waters aren’t about to let up anytime soon. It all started last weekend when heavy rains made their way across central Europe; the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia were among the places flooded. The storms knocked out electricity in some areas and made others completely unavailable via rail travel. Thousands of people have been evacuated already and a state of emergency situation was declared for part of Hungary. Poland has also received some serious damages from the flooding, too. At least 6 people…
