The price of Canada’s oil spills

the-price-of-canadas-oil-spills

In the ‘Great White North’ money and jobs are worth the price of regular oil spills, fires and pollution. At least that seems to be the opinion of the Canadian government, the Alberta government, the fossil fuel industry and others, including many who work for the oil business. Otherwise plans for mega pipelines to the US and Pacific coast might be deterred by the many oil leaks like the one that recently occurred in a tributary of the Red Deer River, resulting in the closure of Gleniffer Lake, a reservoir and recreation center northwest of Calgary. The spill is estimated…

Tar sands: Canada plans pipeline to Pacific

tar-sands-canada-plans-pipeline-to-pacific

As controversial as the Keystone XL pipeline is, it could get worse. Now Canadian PM Stephen Harper is looking to sell Alberta tar sands oil to China, which would involve another massive pipeline to carry the oil west to the Pacific coast. The problem is the pipeline would cross some pristine wilderness and that is a worrying prospect to environmentalists and anyone who gives a damn about not polluting heavily, destroying nature, etc.   What’s more is that in order to expedite oil extraction and exportation Harper is rewriting Canada’s environmental regulations. From the Washington Post: The government has added…

Tar sands: Canada plays hardball with EU

tar-sands-canada-plays-hardball-with-eu

The oil reserves of the Canadian province of Alberta are second in size only to those of Saudi Arabia. They are also more polluting and expensive to extract. In response to the European Union’s plans to label oil imports from Alberta’s tar sands as ‘highly polluting’, which they are, Canada has threatened a ‘trade war’ with Europe. Recent revelations of collusion between the UK and Canadian governments with fossil fuel companies who source their oil from the tar sands show plans to use underhanded tactics to mitigate any damage to the ‘Canadian brand’ of oil. In short, they’d like to…

Ireland: Quiet village fights govt and corporate deal for pipeline and refinery

ireland-quiet-village-fights-govt-and-corporate-deal-for-pipeline-and-refinery

Fossil fuel giant Shell struck up a deal with Ireland’s outgoing Fianna Fail party to construct an onshore refinery and massive gas pipeline in a remote corner of the country. It was one of Fianna Fail’s final acts in power. Locals, many who work in fishing and farming, have campaigned and protested vigorously against the project for some 10 years. They succeeded in getting Shell to reduce pressure levels in the pipe and route it away from the village of Rossport, but are still dissatisfied because of the undemocratic nature of the project and the fact that the plans will…

Breaking: Two new oil spills hit the US

breaking-two-new-oil-spills-hit-the-us

Yesterday the United States experienced two more oil spills: One in the Gulf of Mexico, the other in the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. A tug boat, which was pushing a barge, ran into an abandoned well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday morning, causing gas and oil to spew 100ft (30m) into the air. The well is located in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, some 65 miles (105km) south of New Orleans. Barataria Bay is an ecologically rich wetlands and fishing area that has been unused since the Deepwater Horizon spill began on April 10th. This is at least the third…

Here are two video reports on the oil spill cleanup efforts in China’s Yellow Sea. Two oil pipelines exploded on the 16th of this month in the major port city of Dalian in northern China, resulting in a massive fire and the largest oil spill in Chinese history. The pipelines have now been repaired, but the environmental damage of the spill will be felt for years to come. The oil has polluted an area of 430 sq km. The first video is a report from Al Jazeera English on cleanup efforts in the Yellow sea around Dalian; the other is…

Major oil disaster in China’s Yellow Sea

Friday’s oil pipeline explosion in the northern Chinese port of Dalian has resulted in a large oil slick in the Yellow Sea. The oil leaking from the two exploded pipelines has been stopped, but not before oil washed up on the coastline, soiling surrounding beaches and negatively impacting local wildlife and economic activity. Thousands of firefighters, engineers and even a flotilla of 800 fishing boats are involved in cleanup operations which have already reduced the oil slick by a third from its peak of 50 sq km, according to a report in the Guardian. The leak is likely to add…

Oil pipeline explodes in northern China

A 15-hour fire raged from Friday night into Saturday after an oil pipeline explosion at a busy port in Dalian, China. It is not known what caused the pipeline – owned by the state-owned China National Petroleum Corp. – to explode at the port, but the fire started after a large oil tanker unloaded its cargo. Though the fire has been put out, Chinese environmental protection officials warned that the area is still unsafe due to airborne chemicals. From an Associated Press report: State-run media said the pipeline blew up Friday evening and more than 2,000 firefighters worked overnight to…

Utah Oil Spill Coats Ducks, Geese; Contaminates Local Ponds

utah-oil-spill-coats-ducks-geese-contaminates-local-ponds

While most of the country is currently obsessed with the Gulf Coast Oil Spill disaster, Utah residents have their own oil spill to deal with. Last week, a busted Chevron pipeline sent at least 400 to 500 barrels of oil into Red Butte Creek. The spill was initially at 50 gallons of crude oil per minute before crews were able to cap the leak. Many ducks and geese were coated in oil and a park also had to be shut down. What caused the leak or the extent of environmental damage is still uncertain; however, according to Chevron spokesperson, Mark…

18,000 Gallons of Crude Oil Spilled into Louisiana Wildlife Refuge

18000-gallons-of-crude-oil-spilled-into-louisiana-wildlife-refuge

Sometimes, even wildlife refuges aren’t safe from disaster. A pipeline spilled 18,000 gallons of crude oil into a canal that passes through the Delta National Wildlife Refuge, located approximately 60 miles southeast of New Orleans. This refuge spans across almost 49,000 acres of marsh and is an important home for local and migratory birds. It’s also home to several endangered species, including the American Alligator, Brown Pelican, and Arctic Peregrine Falcon. The pipeline belongs to Chevron Pipe Line Co. and thus far they have closed off the leaking section. Investigations are currently being conducted and the cause of the spill…

New Pipeline Project may Pose Threat to Siberian Tigers

new-pipeline-project-may-pose-threat-to-siberian-tigers

Tigers have been taking the news world by storm lately. We caught a first glimpse of a mother Sumatran tiger and her cubs. We found out that China’s tigers are in a rather bad situation. Now, the news has shifted to Siberia. A new Siberian pipeline has been leaking as of late. Thus far, 300 cubic meters (10,600 cubic feet) of oil has leaked from the pipeline and has covered an area 10 yards (meters) wide and 1.2 miles (2 km) long. This leaking has provoked worry in the WWF environmental group, stating that “the major accident on the new…
