Join Brazilian environmental and human rights organizations, along with the WWF and Greenpeace to stop Brazil’s new ‘forest code’. Sign this petition to urge Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to veto the proposed law that would open up new areas to deforestation and provide amnesty to landowners who have previously cleared forestland illegally. This new law could result in the destruction of an area of Amazon rainforest equivalent to the size of France and the UK put together. Patrick Cunningham of the Indigenous People’s Cultural Support Trust is quoted in the Guardian: The changes will overturn a law which even Brazil’s…

Sri Lankan authorities have agreed to the elimination of 3 million stray dogs. The government has decided to cancel the decision prohibiting the capture and killing their dogs – said Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka. In this country, two thousand people are annually hospitalised because of bites inflicted by strays searching for food. According to authorities, the number of wandering dogs already exceeded 3 million, and has become a serious problem for public health. The killing of stray dogs ban came into legislation in 2006 under pressure from animal protection organisations that forced a sterilisation programme. This, however,…

This week marked the beginning of the annual Dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan. Taiji is where the award-winning documentary, The Cove, was filmed. Approximately 20,000 Dolphins are brutally slaughtered in a tiny cove there every year. This year, the Dolphins were herded inside the cove, as usual. A number of them were selected for captivity/training purposes. Then, the bloodbath would begin, but not this time. This time, all of the remaining Dolphins were set free! Could this mean a turn for the better, or are the hunters simply biding their time until the protesters leave? Yes, in case you haven’t…

There is a new contender for the endangered species list from the US northwest: Franklin’s Bumblebee. Robin Thorp, an entomologist at the University of California at Davis, along with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, formally petitioned the US Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the insect under the Endangered Species Act. Xerces Society executive director, Scott Hoffman Black, explained that the petition is part of an ongoing effort to reverse the decline of bees around the world due to habitat loss, pesticides, disease from commercial greenhouses, and—of course—Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). In addition to those threats, there is a…

If you did a search for birds on Wikipedia, you may stumble across their List of National Birds (“most official, but some unofficial”). From this list, you’ll learn that Denmark’s bird is the Mute Swan, Singapore’s bird is the Crimson Sunbird, and the UK claims the European Robin as their own. However, if you take a closer look at this list you’ll notice there is one glaring omission: Canada. Yes, the country that hosted this year’s Winter Olympics does not have a national bird. The good news is, one group is trying to change that—and you can help! The Canadian…

Lake Baikal: the world’s oldest lake (over 25 million years old), the most voluminous freshwater lake, and contains roughly 20% of the world’s total fresh surface water. Over 1,000 species of plants and more than 1,500 types of animals call this lake their home. It’s also the reason behind a recent environmental protest that happened in Moscow. There is a particular cellulose factory located on the shores of Lake Baikal in Siberia. This factory was closed in 2008, but earlier this year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin gave the okay to reopen the factory. Russian billionaire, Oleg Deripaska, controlled the factory…

There’s a simple form of pollution that lurks in many places. It comes from internal combustion engines, boilers, and burners. You’ll find it near fires, furnaces, and perhaps even while cooking. It can sift through the air, land on clothes, furniture, and even pollute water. What am I talking about? Soot—the icky, black stuff you may find mixed with smoke or ash. Small as the particles may be, soot is enough to cause big alarm, at least for one environmental organization. The Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the EPA to do something about this very problem. In particular, they want…

Anyone who has at least some knowledge of coal usage is aware that coal is an extreme pollutant. It’s the number one cause of global warming and it also has an extremely negative effect on human health. Fortunately, there are people who want to do something about this Facebook nonsense. Change.org is petitioning Facebook to stop using coal power and switch to a more renewable source. If you’re not familiar with the work of Change.org, …
