European supergrid could power UK with foreign green energy

european-supergrid-could-power-uk-with-foreign-green-energy

Soon Wales will receive wind energy generated off the coast of Ireland via high voltage cables spanning the bottom of the Irish Sea. There is already a link between the UK and the Netherlands via the BritNed cable and by 2019 a 900km interconnector between Norway and the UK should be completed, supplying energy from a clever pump storage system powered by wind turbines. Another connector between the UK and France is already in existence, with two more proposed, although one involves nuclear power. The most interesting and by far longest cable proposed would link the UK power grid with…

Auroras are visible all over Norway, but it is best to view them in the north, behind the Arctic Circle. If you are planning on visiting Norway, the best time that you’ll get a chance to see the Aurora is in late autumn and early spring. Best viewed in the night sky between 6.00pm and 1.00am, it is much easier…

20 tons of dead herring on beach in Norway

20-tons-of-dead-herring-on-beach-in-norway

A beach in Nordreisa, Norway is now completely blanketed in dead herring. It is unknown what caused the herring to die; whether it was tides, predatory fish or something else. Scientists would like to test the dead fish to discover the cause of death. From the Guardian: For doom-mongers, the fish were the second a sign in as many days that 2012 would live up to the apocalyptic prediction of the ancient Mayans, after hundreds of blackbirds reportedly dropped dead in Arkansas. To see a large picture of the starling scene check out this article in the Daily Mail.

Norway hosts the northernmost climate change talks ever

norway-hosts-the-northernmost-climate-change-talks-ever

Ny Ålesund, Norway. Population: 30-40. Home to the most northerly post office in the world and a growing community of scientists from across the globe. The former coalmining village is now an international Arctic research station with centers operated by several European countries as well as Asian heavyweight nations China, India, South Korea and Japan. This Norwegian Arctic outpost is 1,000 miles (1,600 km) further north than Oulu, Finland, which is the furthest north I’ve ever been. When I was in Oulu one spring, it was far below freezing while southern Sweden was experiencing temperatures in the 20s C (70s…

Electricity from osmosis – Norway opens first osmotic power plant

electricity-from-osmosis-norway-opens-first-osmotic-power-plant

Statkraft, Norway’s state owned electricity company, has opened the world’s first osmotic power station in the Norwegian municipality of Hurum. The process at the plant is conducted by salty seawater drawing fresh water through a permeable membrane which increases pressure on the side with the salt water. According to an article from the website Nordic Energy Solutions, ‘the increased pressure is used to produce power.’ The plant is only a prototype and not yet capable of generating very much power, but Statkraft has high hopes for the future of the technology. It could one day supply up to 10% or…
