Throughout your life, you may have heard of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. A number of lists have come out on this topic and have included The Grand Canyon, Mount Everest, and The Great Barrier Reef (among many other places). Those lists are all about to change, and you can help make the final decision! It all started with the founding of New7Wonders. You may remember a few years ago, there was a similar vote held to create the Official New 7 Wonders of the World. However, those were man-made structures and this campaign is strictly for natural…

Here’s a little bit of fashion that’s both earthy and awesome: the Wild Clothes collection, by Beatrice Oettinger. This German artist and costume designer takes items directly from nature to make these fabulous outfits. Twigs, leaves, berries, nuts, flowers and seeds are among the many things that make up her clothes, though you certainly wouldn’t know it at first glance! If you ever wanted to plan some fairytale or faerie-themed event, one of these gowns would be perfect for the occasion. You can check out photos of the Wild Clothes collection here or visit the artist’s website here (in German)….

I absolutely love to go hiking. The great outdoors is a wonderful place to explore and to go to for some peace of mind. There are so many spectacular views, vistas, scenic areas and landscapes around the world; all of which are definitely worth seeing. Unfortunately, it may be impossible to hike all those trails in one lifetime. So, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 hiking trails around the world. This list comes from many sources and much research. The trails that have ended up on the list are ones that have been favored the most. 10. The…

Some people say art imitates nature. Other people say nature imitates art. And then you have people like Robert Cannon, who combines art and nature in some truly spectacular ways. Cannon uses an interesting mix of concrete and mosses to create a variety of sculptures. These sculptures are perfect for a garden, home, office or hotel lobby, and many other places. Some of his more notable creations include: a large playable chess set, a gauntlet, a horse head, and a fireplace. There are also usable pieces of furniture, including tables and benches. The artist refers to his work as “terraform…

Earth Day is on April 22. Everyone knows this. However, there is another somewhat lesser known environmental holiday that also takes place this month (depending on where you live). The holiday I am referring to is Arbor Day. Arbor Day is a day dedicated to the planting, care, and celebration of trees. It was officially founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. Many countries around the world celebrate Arbor Day, but the dates vary depending on which country you are in or from. Germany, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, and the US all celebrate Arbor Day (or a similar day) in…

The world today faces two main problems: the economy and the environment. Some would suggest these 2 issues go hand-in-hand. Many have different ideas on how to deal with them. However, very few can agree on what should be done about them. Recently, I was sent a rather interesting video that gives some interesting ideas on how to deal with these very problems. Promoted by The Wilderness Society, this particular video talks about how helping the environment will also help the economy. In particular, it focuses on creating a more “green economy”. Considering the path the world has been on…

The strains of human civilization take their toll on the natural environment in many ways – not least among them the biodiversity of our planet. The loss of species is in fact unsustainable – to both the species and ecosystems that vanish and to humanity who benefits from those species and ecosystems in so many ways. According to a BBC News report the UN lists among these benefits ‘purification of air and water, protection from extreme weather events, and the provision of materials for shelter and fire.’ The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) began at the Rio Earth Summit…

A recent study conducted by the University of Rochester found that after looking at nature scenes, people became nicer. They felt closer to their community and the world around them, are willing to be more generous to charities and organizations, and care more about the outcome of things. Looking at man-made structures or scenes provoked none of these feelings. The researchers believe this is because a connection with nature also helps people connect with their basic values. The study included 370 participants, who were given opportunities to view nature and urban settings. Those who viewed the nature scenes had a…
