In May we ran a couple of posts on how Britons overwhelmingly support a ban on circus animals, yet the UK’s Conservative-led government was against any such ban. The Tory-Lib Dem coalition government, led by Prime Minister David Cameron (an avid hunter) instead proposed a licensing scheme for circuses. However, members of British parliament, including key Conservatives, have stood up to pressure from the Prime Minister and voted to ban wild animals in UK circuses. Yesterday the Queen gave her speech to formally open Parliament. The Queen’s Speech sets out the UK government’s proposals for new laws and policies. Included in the Queen’s Speech was the new government’s energy bill, known as the Energy Security and Green Economy Bill, from the Department for Energy and Climate Change. It is credited to the Liberal Democrat part of the UK’s coalition government, which is headed by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron. In an historical UK election that has left many frustrated and probably no one satisfied, there was a silver – or if you’ll forgive me – Green lining to the Conservative cloud that swept the nation. No, it wasn’t named Clegg either, though one can only help that the Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister will have a positive influence on the Cameron-led Conservative government.
