It’s been a rollercoaster of a project, and the results will be far from perfect but it will be the most comprehensive list to date. –Eimear Nic Lughadha, head of science policy and co-ordination, Kew Gardens (via BBC News) A rose by any other name is still, apparently, a rose. Scientists from the UK and US are reducing the ‘official’ number of flowering plant species by over 600,000 to around 400,000, according to estimates. Researchers from London’s Kew Gardens the Missouri Botanical Garden in the US are cooperating in a project to reclassify the plant list, which doesn’t contain ferns…

In light of a recent survey naming UK companies as the worst among 300 of Europe’s largest corporations when it comes to their contribution to global warming, another survey has been released, this time focusing only on British firms. The new list, called the FTSE carbon strategy index, compares Britain’s 350 biggest companies in terms of their response to climate change. While everyone’s no doubt heard that 2010 is the year electric cars are to debut in the United States, it hasn’t happened yet. So for now, at least, the greenest cars on the market are still Honda’s natural-gas powered Civic GX and hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic. –Balitmore Sun As we wait for the ‘year of the electric car’ to get in gear and plug in hybrids like the Chevy Volt and the fully electric Nissan Leaf to whirr onto the market, we still look to that old standard hybrid, the Toyota Prius to lead the way…

Culminating in the COP15 climate summit in Copenhagen, CNN’s green list includes extreme weather events such as Hurricane Katrina, the entrance of ‘carbon footprint’ into common parlance, the IPCC’s climate change report, the birth of ‘cap and trade’ policies, and the growth of renewable energy sectors. Also mentioned in the CNN article entitled ‘Top 10 environmental moments of the decade’ are the following green phenomena of the last ten years – sometimes referred to as ‘the noughties’ –…
