This summer has been pretty crazy for the south, dealing with the oil spill clean up, the seafood industry, and threatening storms in the area. Sounds like a great way to spend a summer vacation, right? Fortunately, the end to the whole fiasco is drawing nearer (hopefully), but before I go into that, let’s check out some other things that have happened recently, first. To start with, Texas filed a lawsuit against BP, claiming the oil giant put profits before environmental safety. During that particular episode, he was interviewing some of the Sea Shepherd crew and former game-show host and animal rights activist, Bob Barker (who also has a Sea Shepherd vessel named after him). Of course, they talked about the crew and Whale Wars, but they also discussed an ongoing disaster of our time: the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. This agreement comes after a lawsuit was filed against companies last year by the Center for Environmental Health. The group found high levels of lead in vinyl and faux leather handbags, purses and wallets. Many well-known retailers agreed to set new industry standards…

A legal victory occurred this week for Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. US District Judge, John Bates, dismissed a lawsuit filed by a group of Southeast Alaska civic and business leaders. This group challenged a 2008 management plan for the forest that was developed by the Bush administration. The plan would leave 3.4 million acres of the 17 million acre forest open to logging and other development. Approximately 2.4 million acres of remote and roadless back country would have been included in the 3.4 million acres. According to the Southeast Conference and the Alaska Forest Association, the plan did not meet…
