Last Monday’s Climate talks in Cancun could lead to a breakthrough in the climate negotiations. China, one of the nations most looked at in Cancun, has made a proactive offer to have its personal reduction targets binding by submitting them to an international United Nations resolution by the end of the week. By doing so, China is taking on a very positive and flexible position, and maybe even providing a way out of negotiations blocked by many different factors. Offering to have its personal reduction target objectives written down in a binding international agreement puts pressure on other countries, especially…

European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard spoke during the opening day of the COP16 Climate talks in Cancun, Mexico yesterday. According to her the Cancun conference could be an important step towards a worldwide climate treaty, even if other nations like the U.S. are still not ready to play ball. It is very clear that the legally-binding deal that the EU was ready for last year and that we are still ready for will, unfortunately, not be the outcome of Cancun – not because of us, but because others are not ready for it. Greenhouse gas emission cuts need to be bigger and they need to be bigger now; not next year, not 20 or 50 years down the line. Now. UNEP claims insufficient commitments have been made since the COP-15 failure. Although a last-minute “Accord” was drawn up at the conference, which set the necessary 2 C (3.6 F) goal, it did not explain how this goal would be achieved and anyone who even bothered to pledge emissions only did it voluntarily. Adrian Steiner, director of UNEP, stated: “No one should assume that the pledges will be enough.” … “Countries will have to…

Don’t expect any kind of global treaty from future climate summits. It most likely won’t happen, or at least not hold much importance to those involved. Only 2 months since the disappointing COP15 event and the so-called Copenhagen Accord is already being swept under the rug. Drafted amid chaos as a last ditch effort by a small group of countries, the Accord is currently facing its first political test—and not doing very well thus far. A number of veterans have already stated that the Accord has very little impact or traction and is incapable of getting 194 nations to settle…
