videos-etna-erupts-wildfires-in-nz-and-oz-and-sea-shepherd-vs-japanese-whalers

Leave it to ITN to come up with some short and (sometimes) sweet videos with which to catch up on some of the week’s environmental news. We’ve gathered three (yes, three) bite-sized eco-news reports in one place. Why? Because, like the Mouseketeers, we like you! First, check out Italy’s Mount Etna as she spectacularly spews forth molten lava and ash into the Sicilian sky. Next there’s a report on antipodean wildfires raging across New Zealand and Australia. Finally, Sea Shepherd and Japanese whalers fight for both whale rights and whaling rights on the high seas. Guess who fights for which.

Hello Kitty motor oil: The age of stupid

hello-kitty-motor-oil-the-age-of-stupid

In an era when adults play video games and ride skateboards, one might ponder whether too much disposable income prevents people from ever growing up? The new Hello Kitty motor oil from Agip, an Italian petrol/gasoline station chain, would seem to back up that theory. But motor oil? Merry Christmas honey, here’s your can of crude. Now don’t be getting all BP on us unless you’re prepared to clean up after yourself. Giant Japanese cutesy company Sanrio has turned Hello Kitty into an international phenomenon. But where will they stop? How about a Hello Kitty wind turbine at least? Sure,…

Many Updates in the World of Whaling

many-updates-in-the-world-of-whaling

The whaling issue is creeping back into the news more often again and this article is no exception. In recent news, Australia announced plans to take legal action against Japanese whaling, which includes the involvement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). It has been known for a long time that Australia has an issue with Japan’s whaling, especially in the Southern Ocean and their decision comes after a series of rather critical events, including the Sea Shepherd incident, a 6-week scientific research study and countless failed negotiations through the IWC. Speaking of the IWC, their much anticipated Morocco meeting…

China’s growing taste for sushi could ‘wipe out’ bluefin tuna

On Thursday in Qatar, the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) voted not to implement a ban on the international trade of bluefin tuna. The Associated Press reported that the rejection of the ban was seen as good news by Japanese fish dealers, who were worried that it might put bluefin out of many consumers’ price range. Atlantic bluefin tuna stocks have fallen by 60 percent from 1997 to 2007, and environmentalists argue that a trading ban imposed by the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES, would protect the fish. –AP Currently 80%…

The whaling season has ended, but there is still much happening in the world of the Sea Shepherd crew. First, if you’ve been following the news, you’ll know that the captain of the Ady Gil, Pete Bethune, hopped aboard the Shonan Maru #2 last month to make a citizen’s arrest of their captain and issue a $3 million dollar damages bill for the destruction of his ship. Well, that plan backfired: Bethune was detained aboard the ship and taken to Japan, where he was arrested by the Japanese coast guard yesterday upon his arrival. Luckily for Bethune, however, Sea Shepherd…
