Hydraulic fracturing, a controversial method of extracting natural gas deposits from under shale, has been heralded by the International Energy Agency as ushering in the Earth’s ‘golden age’ for gas. So perhaps oil is going to peak, but natural gas has yet to properly boom. Gas does produce less CO2 emissions than oil (but more methane) and is cleaner than coal, but it still emits and pollutes more than renewables. Hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking’ as it is often called, has a host of other concerns including massive water use, contamination of ground water with chemicals as well as air pollution….

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that solar power will supply 20-25% of energy needs by the year 2050. Half of this will be from photovoltaic solar panels, initially driven by feed-in tariff schemes like the UK government’s controversial FIT plan. The other half will come in the form of Concentrated Solar Power, or CSP, which uses lenses or mirrors to focus large areas of sunlight, ‘concentrating’ it to produce electrical power. Solar Trade Association CEO David Mathews sees different roles for both types of solar power generation: photovoltaic for northern Europe and CSP in sunnier, southern lands. From an…

If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. A New York Times article from October 6th cites an estimate by the International Energy Agency that greenhouse gas emissions in the year 2020 will be 5% less than were previously predicted. The reasons? Economic slowdown, for one, but that’s only part of it. The more encouraging cause for this slightly more optimistic prediction is China’s recent focus on energy efficiency, including increasing investment in wind power. Despite China’s recent rise to the top of the list of greenhouse gas emitters, it is also poised to lead the way in Green technologies and…
