Hurricane Irene claimed its first victims today as the storm passed over the states of Virginia and North Carolina. Meanwhile the city of New York and other surrounding cities and states are getting ready for the worst.

In Virginia, an 11-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on his house. In North Carolina three men died as a result of the passing storm.

Meanwhile the state of alarm has been issued in the towns, cities and states where hurricane Irene is expected to pass. In New Jersey officials ordered the evacuation of one million people.

Although the treat of hurricane Irene is very real and could potentially have devastating results, a lot of people from the treathened areas are refusing to move out of their homes. In two remote islands off the coast of North Carolina (Hatteras an Ocracoke) more than half of the inhabitants stayed home against official warnings.

Where hurricane Irene has passed, damage is great. More than 227.000 people in North Carolina are currently without electricity and in many places also Internet. Hurricane Irene is currently still raging over North Carolina on its way to New York.

Hurricane Irene is a third category hurricane on a scale of five and is expected to increase in strength to category four, with winds reaching up to 250 kilometers per hour. It is not often that such powerful hurricane reaches the vicinity of New York.

But now hurricane Irene is threatening to hit New York and hit it hard. That is why representatives of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Connecticut are preparing for the worst by announcing evacuation plans in low-lying areas starting Friday morning. The evacuation plans are mostly voluntary in nature, but the prospect of forced evacuation is real should hurricane Irene pass over at full force with floods, torrential rains, power cuts and serious damage to buildings as a potential result.

For now, everyone is getting ready for hurricane Irene, closely watching the evolution of the threat, hoping for the best but prepared for the worst.
