Animals, Wildlife & Flora, Feb 13th, 2012,
The Tejon Ranch, a massive, high-priced private hunting park located to the north of Los Angeles, California, will suspend its hunting operations after authorities found that mountain lions have been illegally killed on its grounds. Tejon Ranch sounds a bit like something out of an old African hunting safari, where rich trophy hunters pay to be driven close to exotic animals so they can shoot them, mount the heads on the walls of their mansions and brag about how macho they are over cigars and glasses of sherry. A former Tejon hunting guide, Bron Sanders, claims he was fired for…

I was watching a late night show on Flemish television last night when a nature philosopher (Jan Desmet) and a hunter where asked to join the discussion table for a debate about the growing fox population in Belgium. I actually really enjoyed Jan Desmet working his way through defending the fox population against the arguments of a jealous hunter (the foxes are hunting faster and better than them, so their hunting game is threatened) and an opinionated commentator talking about killed pet chickens in bourgeois backyards. The truth is, I was completely unaware that the fox population was growing and…

If you’ve ever wondered about the historical background of whale hunting in Japan, contemporary Japanese attitudes towards whaling or wanted an overview of this controversial issue, check out the following two part video report from Al Jazeera English. Part one of the report gives a basic summary of the economic, cultural, societal and historical aspects of whaling in Japan. In part two, 101 East reporter Fauziah Ibrahim discusses issues of sustainability, culture, sovereignty, legality and allegations of corruption surrounding the whale hunt with Japan’s former whaling commissioner and a representative of Greenpeace Japan. It’s not a holiday advertisement for a rugged getaway, but rather a somewhat desperate move by the Florida state government to control what they see as a threat to their state’s fragile eco-system. I guess hunting pythons is sexier than a moratorium on the construction of new McMansions in the Everglades – and less controversial. Half of the state of Florida’s famed subtropical wetlands have been turned into farmland or urban areas according to a 1999 geological survey by the US government. Furthermore, only half of that half is a protected national park. Still, invasive species are leaving their mark…

Climate Change, Wildlife & Flora, Dec 18th, 2009,
The polar bear has been dubbed the mascot for Climate Change. It is well known for its appearance in books and films, such as the ice bears in Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” fantasy trilogy (The Golden Compass, for example) and the great film documentary, “earth”. It has been used for advertising campaigns by Coca-Cola and Nelvana, appears throughout Native American legend and folklore, and has even been featured as a license plate. This bear is the most carnivorous of its species (all bear-kind). I am sure you are aware that it feeds on seals and fish, and sometimes on…

It may surprise some to learn that wolves are a lot like people. They have a strong sense of family. They tend to stick with the same mate for life (or until one of them dies). They use their body language and vocalization to communicate with others. And they also go through their own type of mid-life crisis. Yes, you middle-aged men and women are not the only species in the world that go through that crazy patch in your life (some of which never get past it either). A recent study finds that a wolf’s ability to hunt peaks…

Some of the world’s top predators are in the midst of fighting a losing battle. Wolves, lions and sharks are amongst those who are endangered, heavily hunted or poached, and quickly losing numbers. Since these big-time predators are falling in numbers, it has led to a major increase of mesopredators, or smaller predators, like foxes and snakes. These increases have also lead to large ecological and economic problems, with few solutions in sight. In North America, for example, all of the top predators have been on the decline for the past 2 centuries; whereas 60% of the mesopredator population has…
